How do i file a suit w/o lawyer against a personal loan not repaid? -

I loaned a guy 15,000 and then paid about 10,000 of his bills to get his business back on track. He skipped town still owing me money. I want to get a lawsuit on file against him even tho I don t hold much hope for ever seeing my money. No lawyer

$15K is probably over the limit for small claims court, but you could check in your area, or sue in small claims court for whatever the limit there is. Be aware that even if you have proof and win your case in court, that doesn t get your money back if he doesn t have it or you can t find him, it basically just gives you a legal paper that he owes you. If you can find him and he doesn t have the cash or won t give it to you, but he does have assets, the court win might allow you to attach his assets, but that s another court proceeding, and you d need a lawyer for that.

In Virginia, you take your proof of debt and go down to the courthouse and swear out a Warrant in Debt. Then you go to court and if the judge sees it your way you get a judgement. Then you can garnish wages or attach a lien. If he has left the state it will be nearly impossible to collect.
