The best way is to ask friends that you trust that have used a lawyer in the past and had a good experience. Another good referral service is your local state bar. You can ask them if they have had any bar complaints, etc.
We have had some classicly bad experiences with lawyers both ones who did an ad on TV and YPgs and one who was city atty and in partnership with the son of someone we knew. Then we found an answer that works for us. We signed up for prepaid legal. This gives us a legal services plan a lot like the way health insurance works. Simply put it uses group buying power to get us access to a top law firm on call for less than $30 a month. We can ask an unlimited number of questions, get contracts reviewed, have them write letters and make phone calls for us represent us in traffic court, do our wills, handle suits, and a lot of other things for no charge other than the monthly fee. They are even on call 24/7 for emergencies like if someone should show up with a warrent if we get stopped in traffic and the officer wants to question us or even child custody things. Anything not covered in this part is still covered at a good discount. Because Prepaid is the law firm s biggest client we get good treatment. No more calling and waiting forever for a call back. No more finding my lawyer has gone who knows where, no more getting ripped off by my cell company (a personal major gripe) or having someone want to charge me an arm and 2 legs for somnething because quot;that sour contract because my lawyer reads the fine print and tells me what to do about it.
