What is the proper way to formally address a lawyer in writing? -

Is it John Q. Smith, esq? or Esq? Or something else? Thanks for any help!

On the envelope and Inside Address: John Q. Smith, Esq. On the salutation: Dear Mr. Smith:

Go by what s on their biz card - but I ve used John Q. Smith, Esq. before, and it seemed to work, as the case went my way.

It would be dear Weasel.
