What are the benefits and disadvantages to being a lawyer? -

Also what types of law help people but still make a 6 figure salary?

Benefits: challenging, intellectual work with smart people. Could work with people if you d like, or could not work with people if you don t like to. Certain fields within law are very well compensated. Job security. A wide range of types of work to choose from. Easy to move into other industries from law. Disadvantages: law school is 3 years long (opportunity cost) and expensive. Almost all fields of law involve detail-oriented work, frequently lots of tedious tasks. Long working hours.

Disadvantages--alot of work, reading, dealing with people, stressed out, headaches, etc Advantages--working with people, socializing, lawsuits, etc.

My dilemma exactly. I would like to help people, but I know such fields of law barely pay the mortgage. Benefits: intellectually stimulating and challenging. Also, there is a certain amount of stability and prestige that comes with law. I plan on pursuing corporate law. Negatives: long hours, and tedious work (especially as a new associate). How I balance my goals of financial success, intellectual stimulation, and community outreach is pro bono work. Many large law firms take on a certain amount of pro bono cases in a variety of fields. So, I can write contracts and litigate, while helping process immigration paperwork or something of the generous sort. Good luck and take time to discern properly.
