How hard is to become a lawyer? -

Now this may seem like a dumb question but during the holidays I met up and saw people I grew up with and some are now lawyers and even lawyers for the state department. None of these people were gifted or super smart. Just wondering what it takes to be a lawyer?

Not VERY hard. Let me put it this way, it is nothing on the scale of medical school. HOWEVER (and this is a big however), it is not going to be easy. Law school is a numbers game. I m sure you will do fine if you go to your state school law school like I plan to. But if you want to get into BigLaw or some huge NYC firm, you better have a J.D from a T-14 law school, or you can forget it. All you should focus on now is to get into a good college, or if you can t, go to a community college, transfer to a nicer school, keep that GPA up, and take the LSAT your junior or senior year. You even said it yourself, no of those people were supersmart. It is because you do NOT need to be Jimmy Neutron to get into law school! All you need is a high GPA and a high LSAT school, that is honestly all you need. Forget about joining clubs. Pick a good major and focus on getting a perfect 4.0 GPA and taking the LSAT later in college. Oh, and I am just assuming that you are in HS. ----- I just want to throw a little extra tidbit out there. Do NOT go into law or study anything related to it in Undergrad if your intention is to make a 7 or 8 figure income. It is NOT going to happen. The chances of you actually being rich are VERY slim. With that said. ALL of the lawyers I know (I do know quite a bit) worked from the ground up. They got good grades in Law School, and obtain good jobs in firms out of law school. Were they making 150k a year? No, but they weren t making 30k a year either. More like 60-80 and that increased BIGTIME. Will you be able to have three kids? Absolutely. Will you be able to afford a million dollar house? Absolutely. More than one? No. Ask yourself these questions. You have to have a goal. You have to be good at your job if you want to obtain a high income. People get confused with the terms comfortable, and rich. Comfortable means 150,000 a year in my eyes, which is VERY realistic. Rich means over half a mil or a mil per year. Most people consider 100,000 a year rich. Those people are dreaming. As an attorney, expect to make that much. Just do not expect the big house or Porsche for 6-8 year after you graduate. If you want immediate satisfaction, forget about becoming a lawyer. Sorry for the long post.

Check in your area for Law Schools, not every school requires you take the LSAT to get in. My friends became lawyers in there later years, and never took the LSAT to get in, I was even thinking of going to there law school, so just do your research. If you want to go to prestigious law school prepare to take the LSAT amp; get ready to compete with university students for the spots. Good luck.

Determination, a dose of humility, logical thinking skills, analytical and critical thinking skills, and a passion for the tiny details all go into being a good lawyer. I don t know your current education level, but start with a BA or BS, and take the LSAT test. It s a must for getting into law school.

I know you re gonna get long and much more expert answers from people who are studying law. It s one of the courses I m planning to take; I m still in highschool, but I ve an idea of what being a lawyer is like, and this is just what I think, because I come from a family of lawyers (and I m still counting. Many of us want to try and be one.) One word: Breakdown.

Lots of dedication and self-discipline, some insight, some intelligence.
