How to get a good lawyer to help you in a domestic abuse case? -

My sister is getting a divorce from her husband. She left with the kids because he was being abusive. She got a restraining order on him and filed phone harassment charges against him. She also went to court and the gave her a protection order for 180 days. That night he broke into the house where she was staying, beat her and pulled a knife on her and told her he was going to kill her and their kids. She got him to leave and called the police. He was not arrested until 2 days later after we called a billion times. Her lawyer was given to her by the womans shelter and a rock could represent her 1000 times better than he is. We live in West Virginia. Any ideas on laws to help her...??? We fear for her and the kids.

Best thing to do is look over some websites of attorneys in your area. You can use a search engine called targetlaw and do a search for West Virginia family lawyer or West Virginia Domestic abuse lawyer. You should be able to pull a ton of attorneys. Review their websites and start calling around. He should be locked up and the key tossed!!! He is no man!

Go to phone book call lawyer who does not deal in family issues, and his assisstant would know who to call. Try this at couple places and see what you find out.

See if you can find another place for her to stay in the mean time, and start making calls. I m sure you can find a better attorney with experience. The main concern is for her safety, and the children right now.

Tell her to get a female attorney on this issue since she would be more sensitive to the matter.
