Can you adopt in Minnesota without going through an agency or having a lawyer? -

Hello we are looking into independent adoption in the state of Minnesota. Can you adopt a child that is a friend of ours child, with getting just a home study done and no lawyers - just have the mother sign consent? Please any info would be helpful. Thank you

No, you cannot. Although you can arrange for a private adoption, you must still be approved by the State of Minnesota as fit to adopt. The same is true in the vast majority of states, if not all of them.

To make it all legal you should stand before a judge and have him say so. If that means you have to get an attorney I would. It s funny how friends can change their mind and you would be heartbroken and the child would be devastated. Just to be safe and then everyone will be happy always. Good Luck, you are wonderful to want to adopt. It s fantastic, how lucky the child is.

If you are too poor to afford a lawyer, then you are too poor to adopt a child. Adoption is a serious matter. Get a family law attorney. It will save you a lot of heartache and legal hassle in the long run. quot;Do-It-Yourselfquot; adoptions ALWAYS lead to serious trouble down the road....
