How to get a Court Appointed Lawyer while your in jail waiting for your court date? -

Someone I know is in Waldo County Jail in Maine and has a court date set on November 7th. He wants to plead guilty (b/c he is) but was told he needs a court app. lawyer to do so. How would he go about doing getting one before his court date??? If any one knows please help me

Basically, he just has to say quot;I want a lawyer appointed for me.quot; He should tell the guards in his jail, and if no lawyer is appointed for him before his court date, he should tell the judge at his court date that he cannot plead because wants a lawyer to be appointed for him. The lawyer will advise him on whether or not he should plead guilty. In any event, he may be able to plead a better sentence for him. Do not proceed without a lawyer!

All he has to do is ask for one.

If he has been charged with a felony, he should have had counsel at his arraignment. November 7 is too far away for it to be his arraignment, because under federal law, the defendant must be arraigned within 72 hours after arrest. In other words, there is something seriously wrong with the facts as presented. Perhaps he has been found to have the means to retain counsel, but has refused to do so. In that case, the court will enter a not guilty plea and the case will proceed to trial.
