What happens when you go to meet with a lawyer at jail with an inmate? -

My boyrfriend got sent to jail last week and wants me to come and meet with him and his lawyer tomarrow (friday) and I m going to but i want to know before hand what it s going to be like. Like are we in a private room with just us three or is it in like a small court room. also about how long does it usally take and will i be able to talk to him at all? any help on this would be greatly apreiciated. thanks. =D

here is the real deal - your boyfriends attorney cannot take you with him to jail to visit. it is strictly illegal for any attorney to have any person, not associated with his law firm i.e. private investigator, legal secretary, translator, present at an attorney client meeting, and i highly doubt that he/she wants to hang up practicing law over an issue like that. as for you you need to contact the jailhouse and get information of when you can see your boyfriend. i am sorry to rain on your parade, but these are the facts.

Every jail is different, but generally if are meeting him with his attorney, you ll be in private room. It may be monitored or through glass, but it will be private. Also, you ll likely have to go through a metal detector, and have whatever you have on your person searched (purse, pockets, etc.). Leave whatever you have outside the jail if you can, and bring only enough to ID yourself. Also, he may have to put you on a visitor list to allow you access. Finally, and I mean no disrespect, but do not wear an underwire bra. They usually set for metal detectors, and they have to have you go into a private with a female guard to check and see if you re smuggling anything.

You are probably going to be in a room at a table with other inmates who are at a table with their visitors. You aren t going to get much privacy - the type of room and rules depend on the facility your boyfriend is housed in. It is definitely not a small court room. If his attorney is there to conduct legal business, you should let him conduct legal business. If it is a regular visitation day, you should be allowed to visit with your boyfriend. Are you on his visitation list? Visitation lists are usually preapproved - you can t have a felony or be on probation to visit an inmate in federal prison, for example, and all visitors are background checked prior to being granted inmate access on visitation day. Good luck -
