Can a lawyer hold escrow money from you? -

I have a payment comming to me, it was given to my lawyer to hold in escrow until I sign a piece of paper. However, my lawyer said he s going to not turn over the escrow money because I owe him money. Can he do this? I live ion New York.

I would contact a different New York real estate attorney or legal expert

I am not sure what New York law says about this, but it is possible. It depends on why the payment is coming to you and what your engagement letter with the lawyer says (if you have an engagement letter). Many engagement letters explain not only the fees the lawyer will charge, but how they will get paid if you do not voluntarily pay.
