You can look them up in the Martindale-Hubbell law directory (which is usually available at the library) which will give you an idea of their career path -- including how many published cases they were involved in. You can call the state bar and/or Board of Professional Responsibility to see if any charges for ethics violations have been brought against them. The best way to find a lawyer for a given practice area IMHO is to call other lawyers in the region who don t list that practice area, and see who they refer you to when they say quot;we don t handle that kind of matter.quot; Usually they will give you the name of someone who does, and it s usually someone they ve worked with in the past and respect as a fellow professional.
By asking for references
Every state has a bar association which not only documents a lawyers past work, but also any complaints lodged against the lawyer. So contact your state Bar Association and ask for information about whatever lawyer you are looking into. They should be more than happy to answer your questions.
