Should i get a lawyer for child support? -

I filed in July 08 for child support. my ex asked for a hearing. we were never married have a 13 yr old daughter. anyways the hearing is not until june 09 now. dont know why it is taking soooooo long. my caseworker told me that it takes a good 6 months for everything to be finalized. now this. it seems like it is taking way to long. i was wondering how much a lawyer would cost roughly? anyone been through this before? thanx!

Getting a lawyer will not speed this up. The courts are overwhelmed with these cases, and this is how long it will take.

don t know what state you are in, but every state is suppose to have a Child Support Enforcement Agency(name varies by state) but once you file with them you are suppose to have a hearing to establish child support within 60 days. And back child support only goes to the day you file with them. Either way you go, the child support scale is the same, the only difference is that going through the court everytime he gets behind, you have to file a motion and go to court yourself, or pay your lawyer to go, with Child Support Enforcement, they moniter how and when child support is paid, and if he gets behind, they will file the motion and go to court(yes you will have to go also, but they use their own lawyer, and it cost you nothing-he can have his lawyer there too, but he has to pay for them-they are not provided by Child Support Enforcement. Child Support Enforcement also reviews each case every three years, and chages the support order as needed to meet the child support scale, and they also enforce that the non-custodial parent has or provides insurance for the child.

they always take forever...only get a lawyer if he doesnt know how to act, or if he gets one himself. otherwise from my experience it can be a waste of money. i ended up paying about 1500 to straighten out a child support hearing and i was only owed 2000 in support and ended up with 500 left over after the bill!

it depend a lawyer could cost you from $2000 to $5000 just be patience you and your daughter will get it
