How do I patent and idea without a lawyer? -

I came up with idea the other day that I am excited about, but I have no idea how to patent it. Is this even the first step?

If it s that good of an idea, you will need an attorney. Putting in a patent without an attorney is like doing your own dental work without a dentist. You will lose and probably not get the patent anyway. The first thing you need to do is a patent search to see if anyone else even has a patent on your idea.
