Name a fiction book about a lawyer who accidentaily kills his neighbor and takes own his name and then stages ? -

The lawyer uses this neighbors body and burns it up in a boat and they think it is him. He then goes out west and becomes a famous photographer. He falls in love then a fat reporter starts digging into his past and they have a accidnet in a small car and the reporter burns up and every one thinks that it is this man. He then goes to California and starts being someone else and the book ends. I would love to know the name of this book and the author.
