It s really not. There s a huge glut and many can t get jobs. The debt load is huge - even for a Tier III and under school. If you don t get a quot;Big Lawquot; job, how do you pay those loans? Sure, if you get into a Tier I, you ll get a job, but you ll work days, nights, weekends and holidays. And, unless you re a rainmaker, you won t make partner. Get a job in a law firm before you commit. See what s what from the inside.
No - this is NOT a wise career decision. Warning: Jobs in the field of Law are drying up FAST!!! This is NOT a good field to invest in!!! Reasons? There are simply WAY TOO MANY attorneys right now (Go to your phone book, look in the Yellow Pages under quot;Aquot;), very bad economy, today many people (mistakenly) think they can do their own legal work thanks to the Internet, there are WAY TOO MANY law schools (and this includes law schools that train paralegals, legal assistants, legal secretaries, court reporters, etc, etc) churning out WAY TOO MANY graduates for today s economy and demand - but the law schools won t tell you this - law students are easy money. The job IS stressful - you do have to work VERY hard to make a lot of money - there aren t any job openings. Even IF you do make it through law school, you probably won t be able to find a job. There are many attorneys today working as legal secretaries just to be able to pay some of their bills. IF you do make it through law school, you ll probably owe approx $150,000 in school debt. Suggestion: Go into the field of Healthcare!!! lt;lt;lt; LOTS of jobs there! Even with your background. Good luck.
It really depends on the person. It is long hours and, although most lawyers make a decent salary, they re not all living in mansions. I can t imagine get much personal satisfaction out being a corporate lawyer, but I can imagine someone really getting satisfaction out of being a human rights lawyer (even lower pay!!) or criminal defense lawyer. If you have doubts now, maybe you should reconsider. Life will be h*** if you don t enjoy what you re doing but still have to do it 60-80 hours/week.
there is currently an oversupply of lawyers. As a result only the very best lawyers are able to make big money. Unless you are confident that you will be above average as a lawyer it is probably not a good career choice. The demand for lawyers will also be in decline especially corporate lawyers due to the financial crisis.
Sorry......law sucks right now..........just look in the yellow pages............tons and tons of lawyers trying to make a living..........law schools are turning out lawyers like a puppy mill........you will starve.......unless Dad owns a law firm.......go in to the health field..........you will always have a good paying job.......the boomers need you.....
Only you can make that determination. Mothers want their children to become professionals and doctoring is too expensive and too long while lawyering is less expensive and easier.
Lawyers are a necessary evil........If you must be one be on the good side (prosecutor) and not on the dark side (defense attorney)
