What type of lawyer or attorney for not having gas - heat? -

Its now been 2 weeks without heat in a new place that I moved in. Its a new construction rehab building. The meters are all messed up and switched around. The gas company has been out 3 times and says that the meters are not labeled properly anymore and they cant turn on the gas. The building owner supposedly had marked the proper one but they came this morning and still could not get it on. Its freezing and my patience is gone, I want to take legal action now. Any advice on what my options are and who is at fault for this? Btw, this is in Chicago if that matters.

Let the building inspector know about the situation. If the gas meters are wrong then it is a violation of building code. Trust me, the building inspectors will get this guy moving or get the place condemned.

if you want to sue for lack of utilities, a personal injury lawyer can handle that for you. Hard to tell whether just having a lawyer contact the owner will have any effect or not. You should also look at your lease for remedy clauses. If this is a condo that s different. In the case of a lease you could be better off just finding a place with working utilities.

You can go to your local housing authority and they will help you and you won t need to hire an attorney. I think you should also follow up with your landlord explaining the problems you ve had, the NO heat issues and that you are expecting him to take money off your rent. Send your letter CERTIFIED, return receipt requested. See if he agrees to allow you to pay less in rent for your troubles with the heat...good luck...I hope you get some heat soon! If you end up moving out and breaking your lease I think you would have just cause because of INHABITABILITY!

Call the BBB, and report them.

how about you get the money you want to use on the lawyers and spend it on a place worth living in.
