Also you bail will more likely be set lower with an attorney. Also, depending on the crime, the longer evidence goes the less likely it will be found. The police were investigating right from the start, while you are waiting a few weeks. That all said, if it is a relatively minor crime and first offense it doesn t make too much of a difference. Like drug possesion, you will probably get probation and a fine as part of a plea bargin, and having a lawyer from day one, or 2 days before court won t make much of a difference.
It depends what happened in court to you before you got an attorney. Usually, the sooner, the better. He probably meant that by the time a week has passed, the charges have already been filed, the bail has been approved or rejected, and a judge has already decided if there is enough evidence to go forward with a trial. You need a lawyer for all of those events.
