What path should i take in college to prepare for a career as a Lawyer? -

Right now im in Community College and I want to become a Lawyer(prosecutor) but i don t know what major to study in. Right now my major is Administration of Justice but im thinking about switching it to paralegal studies because they have lawyer realted classes.Which major should i choose to get ready for a carrer as a lawyer. When i transfer for my Bachelors degree my major is going to be pre-law. Any adive??

Law schools accept students from all majors. They look for students who have received good grades in classes that require excellent writing skills and logical reasoning skills. Philosophy and political science classes definately meet this requirement. In fact, many students who apply to law school majored in philsophy and political science. The University of Washington has an excellent pre-law advising website. UW Law is a top tier law school, so you know you can trust their advice. This was taken from their website: quot; There are NO preferred majors for law school. This bears repeating. There are NO preferred majors for law school. Meet with an adviser for help on exploring majors. Law schools are looking for bright, motivated and accomplished students, so your course work should reflect an inquiring mind: select courses that challenge you, sharpen your analytical reasoning and improve your writing skills. In planning your course work and activities, remember that the study and practice of law requires skill at problem-solving, sound judgment and clear written and oral communication.quot; GOOD LUCK!!! Please respond to the question I recently posted!

Like Medical School there is a myth that there is a specific major one must have in order to become a lawyer. There s not. My boyfriend was NOT a bio major; he was an Economics major and he s currently a practicing physician. My sister was a Anthropology major and she now practices law in DC. What they both have in common was maintaining a near perfect GPA throughout college, having flawless entrance exams, pitch perfect communication/writing skills and dynamic letters of recommendations. Like there is really no such thing as quot;Pre-Medquot; there is also no such thing as quot;Pre-lawquot;. These are just predetermined groups of classes your college deems necessary for people who wish to pursue a career in Jurisprudence. Being quot;Pre-Lawquot; will not give you an edge over an English/Underwater Basket Weaving major who has better LSATs, grades, and letters of recommendations than you.

Law schools accept all types of majors, from justice studies, to anthropology, to engineering. It really doesn t matter much what you study, as long as the major prepares you for the curriculum you ll see during law school. Do well in your courses, score well on your LSAT, along with some extra-curricular activities, and you should be Ok. Study what you like.

What kind of lawyer do i need for a life insurance case? -

my husband passed. now i need to know what kind of lawyer do i need in court when it is the ex wife and i fighting over who should get the life insurance money.

Probably a Probate Lawyer. Possibly a Wills and Estates Lawyer

Ya know, there s no fight here. Whomever is the named beneficiary on the policy, gets the money. You re going to lose this. Even if she quot;signed away all rightsquot;, that is NOT binding on HIS life insurance policy, which is a contract in and of itself. You need a civil trial lawyer, and you re going to have to pay him up front - probably $5,000 to start, $250 an hour is the going rate. Because you re going to lose this. Sorry.

Did your husband designate a beneficiary in writing to his life insurance company? If so, that party gets the money. The insurance company can only pay the benefit to the named beneficiary(ies). It does not become part of his estate unless his estate is the beneficiary.

How can a lawyer quickly/easily get a realtor license in CA? -

My friend is an attorney in California and he is interested to get a realtor license (not really selling houses but just to know more about the real estate industry). He heard lawyers don t need to go to classes to take the realtor exam. Questions: 1. is this true? 2. What materials he needs to purchase to prepare? 3. how many hours roughly for a person with law background to spend preparing this test? Thanks very much.

It s true. A lawyer can sit on the state broker s exam without taking any classes. The test is challenging, but this company has a crash course he can purchase: http://www.retrainers.com/index.aspx

Try callling a real estate attorney for help with your questions. You can find one from this site: http://www.realestatelawyerlocator.com/C... I only have basic experience in Tennessee so I m not familiar with California laws and regulations.

If he s smart enough to be a lawyer, he should be able to find the state licensing board s website.

What form do I need to drop a case for child custody in texas? I am no longer talking to my lawyer? -

I need to drop a case for custody in the Fort Worth courts. I can t afford to give my lawyer $ to do it for me; I am fully capable of doing it; I just need the forms and to fill it out. I have no idea what form that is though, and if I need a form to declare pro per (or whatever its called in this state). Anyone know where to look? I want to get this done by Wed. Thanks!

Try the sites below.

If you want to represent yourself it is called Pro Se. First fire the lawyer so she/he doesn t continue to charge you. Then go to court to file Pro Se papers. Ask the court to dismiss the case due to new circumstances. If you don t show up, you and your ex can be found in contemp of court, expecially if suponeas were delivered. Refile as a Pro Se case. You may have a difficult time getting the attorney to refund your retainer. File the change of representation with the family court. See the court clerk; this person can be your best contact. The clerks are very knowledgeable and will know all of the paperwork to be completed. Federal law requires that both parents contribute to the child s living expenses. If you are the custodial parent and need help, you can ask the state to give you advice and help prepare your case if you are not receiving child support. This is helpful if your ex refuses to pay support. Look in the yellow pages for state advocates for child support enforcement. There is a small filing fee and they need lots of documentation, but it s a very good resource. My ex put off paying child support for years, and he was behind with court ordered support. I could no longer afford a lawyer, and the court/lawyer system wasn t in a hurry to go after him since I worked full time. It takes a while for the process to work, but once it is set up, the state collects the child support and mails you a check once or twice per month depending on how your ex is paid.

If you have not collected welfare benefits, you likely could just file a quot;MOTION TO DISMISS.quot; I doubt a court will allow you to do it though since the support is for the child. Contact your state s LEGAL SERVICES offices and see if they will assist you or refer to you a pro bono attorney.

Here is an excellent site with some wonderful options 4 U.

Maybe this site for Tarrant County will help.

How do I sue a Lawyer? -

I need help trying to find a lawyer that will file a suit against my bankruptcy lawyer. He never did his job properly and now ive still got old bills hanging over my head.Their is no one in this area that will touch it.I live in Indiana. Please help if you can.

Awww, how I love people who sue at a drop of the hat when anything goes wrong in their lives... Bankruptcy law specifies which debts are eliminated and which are not... Sometimes creditors will ignore the filing and continue to try to collect from you. Other times creditors who were not aware of your filing may just now be trying to collect from you... What you need to do instead of trying to turn your lawyer against you is to show him the bills that are hanging over your head and ask him to explain to you what to do about them... You paid him to represent you so you CAN ask him to look into this for you...

Wow, that s a tough one. Well you would need some money a lot of money, do some D.I.Y. law research. Do you know how much school and knowledge this lawyer you want to sue has went through? I mean he mean this may be a Harvard/ Yale graduate. Some may advice you that this may not be in your best interest. Even lawyers may advise you that it is not possible to sue there colleague. I mean you may just have to deal, maybe he did the best he could to get rid of some bills but not all. I mean I wouldn t say sue on your own cause chances are you will lose, and most times, the law will not be on your side, especially if this is a well known lawyer and people show favor towards him. Don t let people intimidate you though, just do your own research about ways and the outcome of someone suing there counsel.

Sue your lawyer because you have to pay some of the bills you acquired? Good luck.

There is an unsaid and untold bond within a professional strata, you should try preparing the case from out of town first, make sure that there is utmost secrecy -the chances of success are more if you catch them by surprise. File the case in person, have the court appoint an attorney. Chances are that they will give you a newbie or loser, have him/her liaise with the petition preparing lawyer so that you can get want you want. You will have to be prepared to pay the out of town lawyer for this though.

my suggestion? PAY YOUR DAM BILLS!!! If you can t pay for it...don t buy it. It s people like you that make it more expensive for the rest of us to buy things. I ve been in financial trouble and my wife and I struggled a lot and penny pinched hard and we re finally have less than $1,000 to go...it took 5 years, but we did it and it feels great and we don t have a bankruptcy on our record.

REPORT THE LAWYER TO THE BAR ASSOCIATIONS Lawyers who do not do their jobs can get sued too, Good Luck

Contact your local Bar Association and explain your problem to them. They can advise you on the proper way of handling this and also recommend another attorney to help you. Good luck.

The new bankrupcy laws make it virtually impossible to completely get out from under the debt you foolishly created. If you feel that your attorney mishandled your case you can make a bar complaint to the lawyers bar for your state. They will review the case and make a binding decision. But you are right, no attorney in the same location/state will touch a suit against one of their own. He would be black balled by every other attorney in the state. If you are going to file a complaint with the bar association you had better have all of your ducks in a row. Have documentation. Request a copy of your file from the attorney who handled your bankruptcy case. Review it. Then formulate your complaint to the Bar.

ONE. PAY your bills. If you won t then you need to find an even scummier lawyer that will sue your old lawyer.

You need a legal malpractice attorney. If you do not stand to recover a lot of money, most attorneys will not touch it. Plus there is the quot;good old boy systemquot; First report him to the State Bar. Ask the State Bar what you can do to help yourself. There must be a legal aid society or Pro Bono group in your state who is willing to expose incompetent attorneys. This attorney should not be allowed to continue practicing if he cannot do a proper job. Bankruptcy laws have recently changed and he may have done all that he can do under the new law. This needs to be gone over by a competent attorney. Good Luck to you.

good luck...it s like trying to get a cop to arrest another cop. after the case was closed you retained that lawyer for a reason. send all the bills back with your lawyer as the contact person and the phone calls his/her way with a reminder that you had filed against them (bills)

You can bring a tort lawsuit against a lawyer in civil court for damages on the basis of ineffective assistance of counsel. Basically, you re saying you hired this lawyer to take care of your bankruptcy for you, he didn t, and as a result you have suffered damages (the old bills you still have hanging over your head). First, you should file a formal complaint with the Indiana State Bar Association. Next, write this lawyer a letter complaining about his less than satisfactory service and demanding a refund of all legal fees. Finally, check your local Yellow Pages and see if you can find a lawyer that gives free initial consultations. He or she will meet with you and tell you how strong your case is. Be prepared for the lawyer to tell you that your case won t stand up in court -- ineffective assistance of counsel is hard to prove. Your best bet is to go in and say you employed the services of this lawyer in good faith with the expectation that he was going to take care of this for you and that he was going to keep you informed if there were any problems or debts that would not be covered by the bankruptcy filing, and he failed to do so. Good luck!

It is possible to sue a lawyer for malpractice. Lawyers do tend to stick together if they live in the same county. You may want to find a lawyer from another area. I was recently involved in a custody fight where the ex s lawyer and a judge both screwed up badly. They should both have been fined and censured. I would have loved to see this happen. The judge is hated in that area and not many people respect the ex s lawyer. My lawyer did not want to push the matter because he has to spend the rest of his career working with them, but the ex s lawyer caved in immediately and the judge was extremely courteous toward me, which was not typical of him at all. Just remember; It is 99.9% of lawyers that give the rest a bad reputation.

Kudos to you for at least trying to sue your lawyer. Unfortunately the (legal) quot;systemquot; takes care of it s own. If it s not too much ($5,000.00 and under in California), I would take him to small claims count. The State Bar is useless amp; doesn t recommend other lawyers. Presently, I am sueing my three former divorce lawyers. The Lawyer s (bad) reputation is well deserved.

How would i become a Lawyer? -

Hypothetically how would i start on the road to become a lawyer?

You first need an undergraduate degree. Depending on the law school you want to attend, there may be a better undergraduate program that they prefer. For example I hear that some schools prefer more science or engineering undergrads while some prefer English or philosophy. Then afterwords you have to take the LSATs and apply to law schools with your scores, transcripts and an essay of some sort.

Everything builds on what comes before. So start strong and keep at it as you go through these steps: 1. Do well in college. It s helpful if you take some courses that focus on research, writing, and analysis. Everything from math to writing courses to logic can be a great help. 2. Do well on the LSAT. Law schools look at the scores from this test to help determine if they will let you in. The better you do on this, the better the law schools you can get into. To do well, it helps to take several months to review practice manuals (you can get in bookstores) and/or take courses on the LSAT. 3. Attend law school (the best you can get into). Focus on doing your very best your first year (and of course well in all years). That will enable you to get good internships during the summers while you are in law school. Getting good summer work will help you to get a good job after you graduate. 4. Take a bar exam. You would take the exam from the state in which you think you will practice. This takes significant preparation (usually during the summer after you finish law school). 5. Get your job! Hope this helps. Good luck!

Do well in school;; Attend College;; Go to law school;; And get a job. :)

go to college get some ucas points go to uni study law

Is there any difference a lawyer can make in filing a corporation verses you file it yourself online? -

If I were to file the corporation myself, is there anything I should be aware of? Is there anything a Lawyer would be able to do veses doing iot myself? Thanks for your time

You can file yourself and probably save some money. But that doesn t mean you shouldn t consider using a lawyer. Here s why. Filing is only part of what you need to do. There s a lot of things you need to know in setting up a corporation. Filing the papers with the secretary of state in whatever state you are in is only part of it. An important part, but not everything you need to do. For example, did you know you need to get a Federal Tax ID number? You don t get that automatically when you file online with the state secretary of state? Did you know that you need to make a decision whether to select subchapter S tax treatment or not? That s an important decision that will affect how the corporation is taxed; making the wrong decision could cost you thousands of dollars in taxes in future years if you aren t careful. A lawyer can help you decide what to do there. Did you know you need bylaws? Filing the application online doesn t generate a set of bylaws. Lawyers can do that. I m not saying you must have a lawyer, but I am saying that there s more you need to know about incorporating than simply filling out an online form and it may be helpful to consult a lawyer on some things/issues you may not even know are out there.

You may want to call your state s quot;Secretary of Statequot; office usually located in the capital building. Depending on the company s size, factored a number of ways, you can be advised on most beneficial quot;filingquot;. If this is your business and only yourself or a few employed you would more than likely file as quot;Incorporatedquot;. You can acquire, I am certain, on you state s website the different types of company filings, i.e., Corporation, Incorporated, LLC (Limited Liability Company), etc. The main quot;objectivequot; is to insure YOUR personal assets, funds, liability, investments, etc., are not at risk. It is also advisable to consult and retain, if necessary, an attorney familiar with your type business. Forming a business may also require other expenses, i.e., workers comp, etc. Insure you have a competent CPA to assist. Good Luck, former your own business can be gratifying.

I don t know what you mean by quot;filingquot; Do you mean you have a problem with a company and want to file a claim to get your money back? ... if that is the case, I d advise doing it yourself at a local small claims court. A lawyer will just charge you for their time to do everything you can do yourself. And if you have the proof, you don t need a lawyer. Just write a statement explaining your side, and then appear in court. You won t be at a disadvantage... if it s small claims. If you mean you are someone that is looking to become a company (incorporated), then talk with your accountant rather than a lawyer.

What kind of lawyer do we need for employer trying to get you to quit because you were injured on the job? -

They took my vacation time away and my work truck, because I had to be off work when I had back surgery. Now they are trying to make me mad enough to just quit.

In agreement with JayJay. You need an employment lawyer who specializes in discrimination. That type of behavior against you falls under retaliation. You can also file a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission at www.eeoc.gov

Your more than welcome and the best of luck. Hope you nail them! Report Abuse

You need a labor lawyer.

Workers comp attorney.

You need an employment lawyer as this appears to be disibility discrimination issue. Employment law is a malpractice minefield and you should look for an attorney who holds himself or herself out as specializing in this field.

Do I need to hire a lawyer from the US or from Canada? -

I am originally from the US and my husband is originally from Canada. We married in 2003 and both reside in Canada. I am a permanent resident in Canada but not a citizen. The split is going very amicably (sp?) so we only really need a lawyer to do all the paperwork but I wasn t sure whether it made a difference whether the lawyer was from. Also I don t know that it really makes a difference but we were married in the states not in Canada.

You need a Canadian lawyer.

divorces are filed where you are a RESIDENT. Different states have their own specification as to how long a person must be somewhere, to be classified as a resident.. I suspect Canada does, as well. No one has to go back to where they were married, in order to get a divorce.

Assuming it is amicable, the easiest thing to do is file it in Canada. That being said, in order to best protect your rights, you should contact an attorney who is experienced in both Canadian and U.S. family law, and have them help you decide where to file. Particularly if children are involved, your rights may be significantly affected by where the divorce is filed...

It doesn t matter where you were married. However, you can t obtain a divorce in a state neither of you reside in. If you are living in Canada, you need to get a lawyer in Canada.

i think u can do either.if u live in canda and get divorce there ,all u have to do is submit a copy of the divorce papers to us government when u come back.they will be accepted.its a matter of convenience for u whichever is easier for u.then it depends if ur dividing any asset.good luck

I almost attempted to give an answer to this, but it s too serious to fool with unless one is sure. So, I am going to suggest that you call legal aid in your Provence, it s free, they ll dial you right in on what to do. Hope all works out fairly. Good luck.

How do I find a lawyer that will take on other lawyers in malpractice issues? -

I am now concerned that my own lawyers are screwing me over as well as a Judge, court appointed attorney, my mother s estate attorney and everyone else. I need to go in front of the Wisconsin Supreme Court with these issues, but am I just going to run into the same problem with lawyers looking after their own kind again? Who do I talk to, or where do I go to have someone answer some legal questions truthfully?

Every lawyer you hire is supposed to owe his/her allegience to you and not to other lawyers. While you may interpret their actions in other ways, you may need to unfortunately reassess if you are being realistic about your goals, or your expectations.

you can find the best lawyers anonymously on www.lawyerahead.com Report Abuse

How effective is offering an offer to compromise to the IRS yourself. Is a tax lawyer needed? -

My tax debt is very high, with no ability to repay due to health. I need to get this resolved.

The Offer-in-Compromise is very tough to obtain (less than 17% were approved last year). You can fill out a Form 433A and Form 656 and submit 3 months of bills and proof of income to try and do it yourself. I don t recommend it. I urge you to hire a CPA, Enrolled Agent, or Attorney. Not all CPAs, EAs, or Attorneys do Offer work. You need someone with experience. Whatever you do, don t hire some company that advertises on TV that they quot;can settle for $20quot; or some web ad that says quot;save 99% on an Offer.quot; Hire a local person or if outside your area, a good professional, not some quot;tax resolutionquot; company. IRS is getting very tough. Don t ignore IRS letters. Before you can qualify for an Offer you must have all tax returns filed and you must be current on 2006 taxes. A new law is going into effect that will require a downpayment with any Offer.

I am a recent accounting graduate and from what I have learned in a recent tax class, the IRS is very lenient when it comes to the ability to pay. If you can prove that the taxes would cause and undue hardship, I don t think you will have a problem getting your tax slate cleared.

Initially you could contact your local IRS office and set up an appointment to talk with an agent or just walk in to see one. Explain your situation. Explain that there is no way you can pay the debt and to do so would create an quot;economic hardshipquot; on you. The agent can help you file any forms necessary. If you don t get the right result there are tax advocacy folks who can help you with your case. Look in your local phone book.

It doesn t hurt to try, but using a lawyer isn t the answer, I honestly would first try an accountant that you are familiar with. You will be very suprised at his or hers answer.

The IRS has officers for that task and they are all you need. Getting lawyers or a CPA involved it will only complicates things and add costs. You If you deal with the IRS directly on this matter you will find its not nearly as bad as you imagine.

Not a tax lawyer, try a tax advocate. With the right circumstances the debt can be forgiven.

Get in touch with these people to see if they can find you a free lawyer. Try to get an experienced one. http://www.abanet.org/

You might want to consider speaking with CPA. Their rates can be much less than an attorney and plus they are just as knowledgeable.

A lawyer would probably be very useful on this one. I think you can do it yourself, but you would be much better off with someone that knows the tax system and how to deal with the IRS. Er, and I hate lawyers in general, but I think for your question, you need one. -Dio

I work with a local tax firm. The IRS will work with you as long as you dont try to avoid them or lie to them. You can write a hardship letter to the IRS stating you are unable to pay due to heath related problems. This can possibly lower or even elimidate the debt you owe. You can also set up payment plans with them. . They will as you to make an initial payment (make as much as you can) and the rest you can pay in installments. Whereever you live, there are local tac firms that may be willing to help you with this. Also I can suggest you call the TaxPayer Advocacy Hotline @ 1-888-912-1227 I really hope this helps.

If you hire someone with experience you are more likely to get a better deal than if you went on your own. They know how much you can get and will be less likely to take a bad deal. It really depends on your own personal variables.

What type of lawyer is needed for a lawsuit? -

I had someone break into my house. They were working for a major home builder and doing warranty work at the time of the break in. My home was scheduled for warranty work but he was not authorized to be in my house at the time. I noticed a few small items missing, totaling around $150. I also found out the company was partially to blame due to not demastering our locks properly. There are alot of other small details, but this is the major information. What type of lawsuit/lawyer would I need to file/contact for this ?

First, I would contact the Sheriff/Police Department and report the Breaking and Entering/Burglary committed by the workers. Next, I would hire a Civil Litigation/Trial attorney, to sue the workers and insurance company in Civil Court.

Did you report it to the police? That is the first and most important thing to do first. Civil case

careful!

depending on how much reparation you want you may not need a lawyer anything under i thing $5000. Is small claims court and it s in the civil department of your court house ..See if you can get a free consultation with a local civil lawyer and ask them what to do. but make sure you filed a police report..

First, get proof that the builder company s guy is guilty. Next, write the company and request reimbursement and maybe they ll pay you the loss without you doing anything further. Ir not, THEN file a claim in small claims court - usually for that small amount of money, no lawyer needs to be involved and they are not allowed in many small claims courts. Also, the court usually has a simple form you fill out so you don t have to draft a big complaint. If you do file a complaint, name the man you think was guilty, AND the company he was representing, AND any supervisors that should have been watching him AND anyone else responsible. You have a bigger chance of getting a quick settlement (and ask for your court fees on top of the $150).

You lost $150, and want to hire a lawyer? I recommend you find a real dumb one, who will take your case for 33% of the recovery, or find a real crooked one that will charge you about $35,000 to recover your $150! Just out of curiosity, how do think lawyers pay their staff, rent their office, pay their phone bill, and buy their books? Sue the parties you think are to blame in small claims court. After you invest about 40 hours of your own time, trying to get your $150, maybe you can spend more of your time trying to find the quot;small itemsquot; that are missing at various pawn shops and buy them back! You don t need a lawyer, you need and economics teacher. You should be advised that everyone has to pay their own attorney even if you win. The company, even if found responsible for your loss, will not be responsible for reimbursing you for any attorneys fees you spent.

Someone broke into your pineapple under the sea?

It is my understanding that anything under $500 is a misdemeanor for collection on theft, you need evidence of items actually stolen, like--caught on home security video, fingerprints, etc. What did the police say? Did you file a damage claim right away? They need it on file because a crime was committed. That s step 1. Also file a complaint with the BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU. Find out if there are other claims against this builder. Ask their advice. The BBB can make or break a business.

What is a BADASS lawyer and how do they differ from other lawyers? -

Sorry P. Hellicat, but you use this term a lot and I haven t heard it elsewhere. I expect it s an americanism for a tough, high profile lawyer who always gets his/her way, what we d call a QC (queen s council).

I think BADASS is an acronym for: Being A Dishonest ****** while Stealing Salary. I can t confirm that on Wikipedia though.

Matlock = Badass........ nuff said

The one from a major law firm who I am sending yet another big fat cheque to today. He has stuffed me around, taken my money and actually sabotaged my chances of getting a decent payout from the surgeon that butchered me in 2002 ! But I have the choice now of either following through with him or missing out, so the B/A gets more money from me today. Clever isn t he? THAT is a B/A lawyer! The criminals aren t only in the jails, they are also in the courts and the chambers.

And you would be spot on, a phrase I believe to be British; definitely not an quot;americanism.quot; EDIT: And not to worry about P. HelleCat... I do believe she can handle the phrasing of your question. **Did I get spot on right? I sure hope it isn t a rude comment. Please excuse me if so... I only meant to say you are absolutely correct in your assessment of what a badass lawyer is. ;-} (Also, plenty of Americans use this phrase, especially if they are on the losing side in a court battle, or if they are on the look-out for a lawyer they want very badly to win for them.) Hope you never need such a person... Luck-- PS. As I recall from days of yore, quot;Matlockquot; is a TV lawyer. Or detective. Something in law enforcement. I ll check it out. Yes, Matlock was a quot;cantakerousquot; U.S. TV lawyer.

They are better at getting criminals off the hook. eg. O.J. s lawyer was a BADASS lawyer!!!!!

Can you clarify my doubts on been a lawyer? -

So to be a lawyer in a certain country, do I have to do a law degree in that country? For instance say, if I wanted to be a lawyer in Singapore, could I do an LLB in law in Malaysia and still practice law in Singapore?....anyway I can do that?

Different countries recognize different degrees from different countries. LLB from only certain top British universities are recognised in Singapore (see Russel Group Universities). Singapore does not recognise LLB from University of London External. I think Singapore still recognise LLB from University Malaya. Singapore only recognise top 5 universities from Australia - Sydney, Melborne, Monash, ANU and Adelaide. You can check with the Singapore Law Society or the Singapore High Commission in Malaysia. Do not practise law unless you really enjoy arguing with people and dealing with stress. Its not a fun career. Make your decision very carefully.

After replacing your current lawyer with a new one, can the new one get a continuance? -

I have my (FMC) approaching in two weeks and want to know if my new lawyer will be able to get the date extended/postponed?

Probaly not if the judge suspects that you are changing lawyers just to get a continuance.

The judge most likely will grant one so the new guy can look over your file.

They can always ask

Can you fire your old and rehire a new lawyer? -

My fiencee is applying for disability and has alrad signed a contract with a lawyer. The problem is the lawyer lives out of state and almost never returns our phone calls. I often don t even get a receptionist. We need some opne to help and advise us? Can we change lawyers at this point?

As far as I know you have every right to do so if they are not doing a good job for you, especially not keeping in contact with you. I would try to get an attorney locally so they can stay in touch with you and let you knowing what s going on. Besides, if your current attorney is getting a percentage of your back pay you will receive a bill usually around 25% for services, so they better earn their keep. I ve had to go through this with my disability. Social Security is hard pressed to provide the financial help, mainly because the SS funds have been ripped off, misused by the Government.

You can fire your attorney for cause at any time. Keep track of the phone messages you have left and the return phone call time. You may, however, have to reimburse the attorney for any out-of-pocket costs s/he has incurred up to date. Best to go to a new attorney first and have this attorney take care of dissolving the past relationship.

YES! You can change lawyers at anytime; if you have a reason... And anything you can think of is a reason because you hired the lawyer. Best wishes; and good luck! ?

Even if you signed a contract, you can quot;firequot; an attorney if they aren t doing anything for you. If you gave this guy a retainer--better to lose it than continue accomplishing nothing. You can get free consultation with another attorney (do some research amp; be sure you have reason to believe in this one s competence amp; integrity!) amp; find out exactly what the process is. I truly wish you all the luck in the world!

Of course you can!!! And I would immediately. No receptionist answering the phone is NOT a good sign. DO NOT SEND ANY MORE MONEY TO THIS FLAKE. And at once, hire a new attorney. Most likely, you will lose any monies given to first attorney but at this point in time who cares!!! You need a better lawyer. One that will answer the phone for pete s sake. Good luck

YES, YOU CAN FIRE A LAWYER AT ANY TIME IF THEY ARE NOT RESPONDING TO YOUR CALLS,ALWAYS MAKE DOCUMENTATION OF WHEN YOU HAVE TRIED TO REACH THEM,BECAUSE THEY WILL BE IN DENIAL..ITS YOUR MONEY AND YOU PAYING THEM FOR A SERVICE THAT YOU ARE NOT RECEIVING.

DEPENDS on your agreement ..the one you SIGNED with the lawyer. You could consult with another attorney and have them review the agreement to see if they can get you out of it..

Where can I go to find a group of consumers who would like to sue Experion, or a lawyer to help me sue them? -

Experion, they have wrongly accused me of another persons debts. And I have proof to the contrary, I have sent them all the proof they have required and they still will not remove these venemous slights, I have had my fill of trying to deal with these people. I want justice! There must be more people that have had a problem with this company, please advise of any help, consumer lawyer, angry citizen, ect. Thank You!

You are barking up the wrong tree. Experian is only required to contact the company reporting the debt and ask them to investigate it. You need to contact the company(s) that are reporting the debt to Experian. Also, if they are reporting it to Experian, there s a good chance they are also reporting it to the other bureaus. Fair Credit Reporting Act: http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fcrajump.... Fair Debt Collection Practices Act: http://www.expertlaw.com/library/consume... Good luck, in my experience, neither act has enough teeth to get anyone to do anything legal.

I am 13 amp; want to become a lawyer. Is there any advice that you can give me that will help me in the future? -

I know that to become a good lawyer you need to be able to have the ability to communicate well. I can communicate with people, but I wouldn t necessarily say that I am too good at it. Is there a way I can get better at this? Also, my dream is to go to Stanford. I know it s kind of too much to hope for, but I have straight A s in school and I think I might have a chance. I would really appreciate any advice that anyone could offer to me; I know I am a little too young but I think it is good to get a head start on things.

Talk to lawyers. See what they do in a regular day. Make sure you really want to be a lawyer. In law school, they tell you to watch the law shows to pick out all the stuff that is wrong. TV has a pretty distorted and inaccurate portrayal of what lawyers do (we re actually more boring; would make for lousy TV). To get into stanford, along with grades and test scores, you need great extra currics and letters of rec. So, get involved in activities now. Start talking to your teachers. Lawyers primarily need to be able to write well. Instead of watching TV, I d read. I wouldn t say taking a logic class is required. I took one. Didn t think it was that much use. Debate clubs, Model UN, those kinds of things are helpful though.

I find that talking to someone that already works in your field of interest can be quite helpful. And I also agree with the person before me that suggested taking a criminal justice class. Its good to aim high! Go on line and request an information packet from Stanford. Also, once you enter high school, establish a good relationship with your counselor and make sure that s/he knows what your goals are. Good Luck!

Well, I am 14 going on 15 and my mom says that if I want to be a lawyer, I need to have taken debate, logic, constitutional law, and that I should know how to write good essays. Hope that helps.

Several high schools and junior high schools, offer electives in Criminal Justice, Public Speaking, Communications. Try taking some of those classes and see if you like them. You have to be able to handle people with a wide range of emotions such as crying or yelling at you, possibly even cursing at you. If you are a strong person and can handle that as you get older and like the courses...you have a good shot at becoming a lawyer. Once you are in high school, you can see if your school offers Vocational Office Education. They may be able to get you a summer intership working as an office assistant at a lawyers office. I wish you luck in whatever you choose!

The LSAT is largely logic, so start working logic problems now. (You can find them on the net, buy books of them, or even magazines.) Don t major in Pre-Law in college, law school admissions people don t like that. Major in Business or English or Communications instead. Dervelop good study skills now.

Can an quot;inexperiencedquot; lawyer start a law firm by himself? -

My brother has an undergraduate degree in accounting and went to law school and of course passed the bar. He is planning on starting his own law firm (it will be specialized in quot;debt reliefquot;, but general practice as well). Will he have a hard time?

Yes, he ll have a hard time. First, he ll need to learn the material necessary to practice that type of law - and that s not something he learned in either law school or bar review. Second, he ll need to bring in clients - and that can be an almost full time job on its own. Third, he ll have to service those clients - something that s not easy for any lawyer practicing solo. Finally, he should learn that in some states use of the word quot;specializedquot; is prohibited unless he actually has some form of certification as a specialist.

yes, you don t have to be a lawyer to start a law firm

Well anyone just starting out has a more difficult time than a more established person simply because he won t have a reputation to build on. If he is sharp and works hard, this phase will pass and he will soon have a client base. How successful this will be depends a great deal on his personality. Many people need to work for others first simply to gain experience and confidence. However, if your brother is ambitious and does a good job, there is no real reason for him to wait. He may find that taking on a more experienced partner is a good way to both gain experience and still be independent. best wishes

Of course he will have a hard time, just as any new business owner does. But yes, he can do it and he can be successful. His law school should have offered a class in doing exactly that. Mine does.

Yes and no. Yes, he can start a law firm himself. However, most states require a duty of competence, which prohibits a lawyer from taking a case or client unless they are sufficiently knowledgeable to provide competent service. Most attorneys fresh out of law school do not have the broad experience base necessary to be able to handle everything that comes their way -- hence the mentoring arrangement that occurs in most law firms. Your brother can open his own practice, but would either need to limit his fields of practice to those areas where he is already familiar AND do a lot of studying to learn the proper procedures.... or if he has a mentor who can answer questions as they come up. It can be done, but it s a lot of work, especially since all that would be in addition to finding clients.

He can, but without the aid of senior counsel to assist him in matters he has never dealt with before and without an established client base he may have a rough time in the start. Hard work and a keen sense of law can make the hard start worthwhile though. A more senior partner could certainly be of assistance or otherwise I would suggest he set up a practice of himself alone for the time being that way he is not stuck with others underneath him seeking a share of the referrals and new business.

What is a discovery in a juvenile court case and how long does a lawyer have to get it to another lawyer? -

From what I understand, a discovery is some kind of evidence against someone. I need to find out and find out if there is a limit on the time for it to be transfered from one lawyer to another.

Discovery is the process of exchanging evidence and information between the two sides. Not all of the information exchanged needs to be admissible as evidence, as long as it is relevant to the case. The specific rules and timelines vary by state, and by the local rules for each court. Where there is any doubt, the judge can clarify when discovery needs to be completed.

How do I go about finding a good defemation lawyer? -

I have a solid case and have no idea on how to proceed. Any advice would be appreciated. I am not doing this over something stupid or trival. I have had a serious allegation made against me, and I can PROVE that it is false. This allegation has pretty much cost me my career so please no quot;get over itquot; comments. Looking for a good lawyer in the West Tennessee area, preferably Madison County. Thanks in advance!

Do you know any lawyers? If so, you can ask them for a referral.

quot;Pretty much cost youquot; -- or you can actually prove financial damages? If you can prove that you suffered financial damages, then proceed with an attorney -- but defamation is extremely difficult to prove.

Mueller amp; Ellis, PLC , may be of good help to you. You can contact them on line by visiting http://www.muellerandellis.com/CM/Custom...

Call your states Bar Association. They should be able to give you a really good referral in your area.

Can a lawyer file a judgement after the SOL has passed? -

I live in NC. In 2003 I defaulted on a $5000 C.C balance. A few months ago a lawyer group had aquired the debt and contacted me. I started paying $100 a month, but missed last month. Now the lawyer is contacting me saying they are going to file papers for a judgment (even though I have no problem mailing in my last payment). I know the SOL is 3 years in NC, but did I restart the clock by making the payments recently? Also, can they file a judgement. And if so what does that mean?

When you paid them you started the S.O.L. over again so yes they can take you to court and get a judgment. If they do this they can attach bank accounts, garnish wages (if your State allows it) and file liens on any property you may own like cars, boats, land and homes. Additional inrormation; The type of debt has nothing to do with getting a judgment. If they can not find you to serve you all they have to do is post it in the newspaper.

Actually judges frown upon debt collectors publishing it in the newspaper to obtain a judgment. In many jurisdictions, it won t be allowed. Personal service or service by certified mail/RR is REQUIRED. Report Abuse

LOL, if they cannot find you? All you need is a driver s license for a judge to say personal or mail service necessary. If you don t have a d-license, but you have credit debt already, you re an idiot. Report Abuse

Yes, you did restart the clock by making a payment. They can file a judgment because they want to lock you into paying. It s no reflection on you. But I think it s just a scare tactic to get more money out of you per month. They re trying to do that or get the money up front, now, by attacking your assets after obtaining the judgment or performing a wage garnishment. Assets like your car. You re paying, right, so worry not. Don t be surprised if they file the paperwork and they talk to you about higher payments or a settlement. If this happens tell em to go f*ck themselves and take a picture for Vanity Fair. They can read your one line answer to their complaint and you ll see them in court at the hearing. If they coulda taken it, they woulda, right?

Bob, thats not entirely true. I just had a debtor file banko on an account that I have a judgment against her on. When I was awarded the judgment I had the court issue a FiFa/writ of execution against her house. When she filed her banko papers she stated I was not a secured creditor, which is partially true. The account was not secured, but the judgment IS secured by the house/property that was attached by the FiFa, making me a secured party on the house. That was according to my attorney who defended us in court.

quot;Unsecuredquot; means that they do not have an automatic, high priority ,claim on a specific piece of property, like the car in a car loan or a house in a mortgage. They have a general creditor s claim on all your assets, but they have to go to court to enforce it.

You entered into a new contract with the lawyers when you started paying them. They bought your old debt and are really just bill collectors. You would ve been better off never paying them, because now your credit will look bad for longer.

if suit hasnt been filed yet in the case in any manner..and the statute has passed, then they cant file a judgement. i m not positive of this but i m about 70% sure?

I need a good child custody lawyer that can practice in Kentucky? -

I m fighting over custody of my 2 children and live in the state of Kentucky. Can anyone tell me of a good custody lawyer that can practice in Kentucky?

Contact the Kentucky State Bar association. Good luck

Should one have a lawyer at all times? -

Whenever someone is arrested or faced with a tough legal situation, the standard response is usually quot;I need to talk to my lawyer.quot; However, the thing I ve always been wondering about is, quot; What lawyer?quot; Should one always have their own lawyer available just like one has a doctor? Or, should one only seek out a lawyer when they need it? Do you maintain a relationship with a general-case lawyer so you know exactly who to seek when there is a legal issue at hand?

It would probably be wise to at least know the name of a good general practice lawyer, or be friends with one, that you can call in the event of an emergency and know they will at least pick up the phone and speak with you. They can always refer you to someone more specialized if you need it. Many people don t get a lawyer until it s too late. Many saavy business people know that an ounce of prevention is less costly than one big screw up so they routinely check things with their lawyer before taking action.

Yup, get to know a lawyer you can trust but the arrangement would be you get to pay him, if only when ya need his services. On call basis. Not like big companies who hires a lawyer on a daily basis, they get paid even without a case in progress but they do office works. So that in any event you need 1 on emergency, a lawyer is on standby to attend to your needs. He will wait for your call 24 hrs a day in case you need his advise.

Yes, it s essential in this day and age. I don t have a lawyer but I wish I did. It s also a day in time where one has to constantly keep written documentation of all their actions and copies of important and not-so-important papers because you never know when you may find yourself in court- or for what reason. I feel as if I have to document my whole life sometimes (in case something were to happen). It s freakin annoying.

Well, you can change the standard response to quot;I need to talk to A lawyer.quot; One does not necessarily have to have an actual lawyer hired before exercising his rights to talk to the lawyer before answering any questions.

Good idea.

How do I find the lawyer who represent Home Depot? -

I used to work at home depot and I got in trouble and the lawyers contacted me to pay a fine via letter. But the paper got wet. How can I find who the lawyer is? I believe they were located in florida. I called the store but everyone up there are idiots! They have no clue.

Use the link the nice answer gave you and get in touch with corporate headquarters, they ll have a record of it.

Yes I know they are, but ask to speak to the Boss of that store! don t talk to the pee ons, what puzzles me is, unless they took you to Court, how can these lawyers make you pay a fine - to them? If you did something wrong, this should have been handled through the Courts, and if any fine had been ordered, you should be paying it to the COURT not them!

how is it that home depot lawyers are imposing fines, and collecting them outside of normal judical procedure

Try looking here: http://coloradocaraccidentlawyers.blogsp...

http://corporate.homedepot.com/wps/porta... This should get you on the right track...

How do you find a lawyer who will actually help you? -

I have had 2 lawyers so far who only made my situation worse. One was recommended by a friend, the other by one of those find-a-lawyer call lines. How can you be sure your lawyer is working for you, not against you? I live in a small town and get the feeling they are all friends.

The best legal advice I ever got was ,quot; If you need a lawyer, contact your local bar association. Depending upon the type of law involved, there are various committees made up of the members who keep each other up to date on various aspects of, for example, criminal law, real estate, tax, medical malpractice, etc. Call your local bar association and ask for the chairperson of the appropriate committee. It s the best way to get someone who is very competent in the area of legal practice without paying an arm and a leg.. good luck! As far as them quot;knowing each otherquot;, that s more than likely the case. However, for them to violate the confidentiality of either a client or a potential client is a very serious breach of professional ethics. Any ethical lawyer(the vast majority are, 99.9%++) will, once he or she has agreed to take your case, will work for you... Good Luck!

Try FatLaw. FatLaw ratings are by former clients. I think people rate Attorneys better than other Lawyers, perhaps more honestly. You can also read negative ratings so you will know what Attorneys to avoid. Try it here: http://fatlaw.us Report Abuse

In a small town, all lawyers must work with the same justice system, and it may seem like they are working against you but they have to work with other clients, too, so go out-of-town for more advise. You don t have to fire your lawyer, but just educate yourself from other sources, like email attorney at Legal Support Services, legalsupport@email.com AND do homework on your legal issues, web search, etc. Remember the attorney must act as you direct, but if you don t know how to direct him/her, they will do what they think is best, even if you don t agree after the fact.

Depends on why you need a lawyer. You may be better off to go in prose and do some homework on your own. Try the wikopedia online it has alot of legal resources

Finding a good lawyer is often the result of trial and error. The best way is to ask an attorney who doesn t practice in the area you need help in. They will know which lawyers are good and they want to recommend someone who will reflect well on them. Lawyers want clients who bring repeat business and pay their bills. So unfortunately the kind of service you get often depends on how much money you will bring them but all lawyers are responsible to perform to certain minimum standards.

Please contact me. I will get you in touch with a TOP Law Firm in your State. This is VERY affordable and you can trust that they will take care of you. Each Law Firm has to go through a Customer Service Course in order to be a member with this Service. Each Law Firm is paid over a 1million a month to help clients like you and me that can t afford Large Up-Front costs or Large hourly rates. Please click the link below and watch the online movie presentation about this service. I will get you access to your Legal Rights and bring Piece of Mind. Sincerely, Jon

Surely you have access to a telephone! Contact your legal aid board! You don t say why you need a lawyer . . . perhaps the problem is that what you require a lawyer for is not th line of lawyering practiced by the ones you have consulted. Remember: lawyers specialize in specific fields. If you still have problems finding the quot;right lawyerquot; consult a local Court - the court officials should be able to put you on the right track!

I don t think you will find a lawyer who really cares about his clients. A lawyer will take your money as fast as he can and do as little as possible for it. Trial lawyers are a big part of what s wrong in this country. They will take any case that they think they will be able to put some quick money in their pockets whether their client is right or wrong. An example for easy money for a lawyer is the ongoing asbestos law suits in this country. The lawyer will take about 78% of the total amount, while the person with asbestosis will see about 22%

What type of lawyer should I contact? -

I worked for 3 weeks before my employer disappeared without paying 5 of his employees. No one has been able to reach him to get our hard worked money and it seems he is trying to sell his store in order to pay us, but he s just taking too long and not trying hard enough, so we want to take legal action. What kind of lawyer do you get to sue an employer for owed money?

You may need an employment lawyer. If you do go to court make sure you talk to lawyer about putting lien on his property that way if he sells you ll get your money thru the sell of his property. Or a lien on his house same thing as above.

Go to the labor board

why not just a regular lawyer

Is it a good idea to major in psychology to become a lawyer? -

what degree do a lawyer need? what degree is psychology? someone told me its a masters. what s the best major in college to become a lawyer?

journalism-you need GOOD verbal/communication skills to read people and between the lines. Many attorneys I know have jounalism degrees under their belt and vice versa! Geraldo Rivera has jounalism and law degree MANY of the newscasters have law degrees under their belts. LAWYERS Mark Geragos,Nancy Grace,Greta Van Sustran,Bill Kurtis,Gloria Allred, ALL POSESS LAW+JOURNALISM DEGREES. MORE DOORS WILL OPEN for you as a lawyer when you also have a jounalism degree vs.a psychology one which is also good but to BEAT THE ODDS and not be cliched because MANY law majors follow the same route of also obtaining a psychology degree/A music degree wouldn t be bad either it encourages quot;analytical thinkingquot;one of the BEST traits to being a LAWYER. BEST WISHES AND GOOD LUCK.

Ha ha. That s an interesting question, and I get it a lot. Um--- if you want to be a lawyer, then you have to go into stuff like criminal justice and law. Psychology requires usually at least a Masters degree and a licensing depending on the state. BUT- it wouldn t hurt you to take some psychology electives while pursuing a legal degree, but it may seem confusing to you.

I think it is usually history..Pre-law is offered at some colleges.

You wouldn t need a master s as you can go straight from your bachelor s to law school. A joint degree or double major in history and psych would probably be beneficial. Also, some undergrad programs have pre-law majors.

There is not one specific undergraduate degree that is required for becoming a lawyer. I have a degree in psychology and can see where it could be useful. However, I would probably choose psychology as a minor at best. If I were planning on becoming a lawyer, I would probably major in political science or history. English and philosophy are also fairly common options as majors or minors.

Law is an ART. and yes, the most preferred undergraduate courses for law are psychology, English literature, speech communication, journalism, and other behavioral sciences. you see, it has been a wrong stereotype that the perfect undergraduate courses for law are political science and economics. according to researches, lawyers who have taken these to the undergraduate course tend to be tunnel visioned. most are not flexible and cannot handle the stress of the profession. psychology is perfect. believe me. it will take you to the top..^_^

How do you file for divorce by yourself in Georgia?can you get alimony without using a lawyer? -

How do you file for divorce by yourself in Georgia?can you get alimony without using a lawyer? I GOT RUDE ANSWERS TO THE LAST QUESTION...I need ailomony because he was abusive and controlling, controlled me financially,i have nothing of my own and no credit cards or bank account im also extremely ill and applying for disability but it takes a long time maybe even yrs to get it!

I recommend talking with someone about this ... but the alimony is a court order. Thus, I would think you would want to get a lawyer. The alimony would pay the attorneys fees in a short period of time. Additionally, you can fight for him to pay 1/2 of the attorney fees.

How long does it take for a lawyer to meet up with a prosecutor? -

My lawyer is taking for ever to call me back.. from meeting with him. i guess he has list of other stuff he has to do too.?

The lawyer usually doesn t meet up with the prosecutor until the day of trial right before your preliminary hearing. That s how they do... and they won t usually meet with you until then also at the courthouse. I don t know why but that s how it works. I work in the field. See it everyday.

That all depends on how much you are paying your lawyer. First of all they don t meet on the date of the trial, they do in general meet before that at a preliminary trial (if it is going to that) or even earlier when your lawyer, the judge, and the crown rendez-vous in a courtroom themselves (or a judges chambers) and the crown would inform your lawyer what they are offering you if you plead guilty, or what they would ask for if you plead not guilty. Really, the prosecutor s are always booked and so are lawyers. But when you pay your lawyer well he does his work well. In general it s a minimum of one or two weeks, anything past that is generally excessive. It could be that your lawyer is taking matters in his own hands and wishes to wait a bit to see if anything else unfolds. Without further details I cannot give you a better answer.

Should familes respect the eldest grandchild more than the others simply b/c she is a lawyer? -

Our family is pretty big, and it appears that the oldest grandchild gets so much more respect than anyone else, she is a lawyer but the other kids also have careers one is a nurse, one builds housing two are in school to become a nurse, one works for the US embassy, so why is she so much more favored, her opinion counts and no one else s does.I am getting very flustered by this.

everyone needs equal respect..but families don t always do that..playing on the favorities..and so on..that is sad when one person receives all the attention.

No, that s wrong. It s just like that bible story (I m an atheist, but I still know the story XP) where the man favors his youngest son. Of COURSE the siblings are going to get jealous enough to sell him to a slaver, DUH! XD Sorry, had to get that out of my system. Anyway, I think favoritism is wrong. Just my opinion, though.

Because the lawyer is the one that has the biggest chance of being needed or used. Free legal advice and able to pull strings if needed.

I want to know do I need to hire a specialized lawyer or should I take my chances with a public defender? -

I was charged with aggraveted driving while revoked. They are using 2 past occurences while driving suspended, and are trying to give me a deal where I have to spend 45 days in jail. My question is would a real lawyer keep me out of jail all together and also reduce the charge from a felony to a misdemenor? If there is any insight out there please let me know.

Here is the thing about public defenders.....you can get the worst one in the world or the best. A paid lawyer can t get you a better deal than a public defender can, the deal they are offering is up to the DA. What a paid attorney is better for is a trial because they have more access to expert witnesses and things like that (which you would have to pay for). A plea bargain is a plea bargain. Depending on how close together your charges were, they probably won t let you plea down. You want some legal advice? Stop driving with a revoked license.

sounds like you have no regard for the law and are headed for jail sooner or later anyway, probably multiple times once you cross over the threshold the first time. so do what you want to do - don t blame us for bad advice. we would have advised you not to do any of the things that got you here - we are not taking responsibility for your outcome now.

After High School, what are the steps to becoming a lawyer? -

You don t have to read this if you don t want to but here is what I want, it would be great if someone could help. So anyway right now I m in High School and I m getting an IB Diploma. I want to become a lawyer when I get older. However, for college, I would love to study in Germany for however long is needed just to get the experience of it. So would me going to college in Germany make sense? Even if it was for just one or two years. After school in Germany, would I then come back to America and go to law school to finish getting my studies? PLEASE HELP! By the way one of the reasons I want to study in Germany for a few years is because tuition will be mostly free with the IB Diploma and I love the German language.

1 or 2 years won t hurt. However, I d get your degree from a US school. Otherwise, you may run into problems getting your college education recognized by law schools or a State s Bar. Oh, I saw your other question. You intend to study law over there. Well, unless you do international law with just Germany (not sure what the job market is on that), you d be wasting your time. Either pick another subject (like Finance or even just the German language), or do a degree in Law there, then come back here and try and get a LLM from a US school. Then, maybe you can be licensed to practice in both countries. Don t do law there for a year or two and then come back here to finish undergrad. We don t study law in undergrad here and law schools tend to not like kids who take too many quot;lawquot; titled courses in undergrad cuz they think they have to untrain these kids.

Basically, to become a lawyer you 1) Graduate from an accredited university. 2) Take the LSAT (can be done while in college). 3) Apply for and get into a law school. 4) Take and pass the bar exam in the state(s) where you want to practice law. You would be wise, however, to check with the local Bar association in the country / state where you want to practice. Individual requirements may vary, but this is the most common path. Personally, I think your idea of studying abroad would help to differentiate you from other candidates looking to get into law school. You can major in whatever interests you so pick something that you wouldn t mind doing if for some reason becoming a lawyer falls through. Also, if there is a particular branch of law (e.g., business, criminal, patent) you want to go into then consider that when you pick your undergrad degree.

YOu will need a 4-year degree (in anything), then apply to law school. You will need to take the LSAT before you apply to law school. But you have to have a 4-year degree from college or university before the 3-year law school.

I waited 10 years to attend college after high school. I have travelled all over the world, and have learned to speak French. I am not the same person I was when I was 18. I plan to graduate college this year Summa *** Laude. Waiting made all of the difference. I would say go to Europe. If you truly wish to be a good and admirable lawyer, be sure that it is your passion. Your first step to becoming a lawyer should be this experience - as a basis for future reflection. You are in high school. While you are of a mature age, your maturity is about to quot;do right by you.quot; Your perpectives are going to change. Go for it.

What kind of lawyer do i go for custody papers, not divorce but accidental death.? -

If something were to happen to my husband and I we have a guardian picked out already, what type of lawyer do we go to for the paperwork? Thanks,

Family Law - Estate Law - what state are you in - check with the Law Board for the state you are in and they can recommend someone - Good Luck and God Bless

So how do u plan to kill him.... LOL

Just about any lawyer can help you. You might want to go to an attorney that handles quot;Family law.quot; To help you find one, in the phone book look up a bar association referel center, or call a local university that has a law school.

What is the singing style that the 4 lawyer guys use on scrubs? -

You know ted and the 3 other guys.

It is indeed quot;a capellaquot; singing, which means singing without any accompaniment, or instruments playing with them. It is also in the style of quot;Barbershop Quartetsquot;, which is typically 4 men (can also be women, but was traditionally male voices), singing different notes. One sings the melody, two sing harmonies below the melody and the last one sings a harmony part above the melody. The top two voices are called Tenor 1 and Tenor 2, and the bottom two are called either Bass 1 or Baritone, and Bass 2 or just Bass. Hope this gives you a bit more information!

They are singing a capella.

Barber Shop Quartet is what they are... technically its just accapella (sp?). But yeah

Do i need to hire a lawyer for Immigration to canada? -

I want to immigrate to Canada, I completely know the rules but decided to hire a lawyer because my first language is not English or French and i don t want to have grammer errors in my application!!! Do u have any solution for me? Do u recommend hiring an attorney? Do u know a good attorney? any comments is appreciated. Alex.

all you have to do is fill out the paper work for a visa. cant remember the sites address but try. www.canadiancustoms.ca if thats not it google it. they will have all the forms that you can print out. good luck

I suggestyou speak to an Immigration Specialist or complete a free online assessment http://www.immigrationunit.com... Good Luck! Report Abuse

I would have imagined you would have gotten a response in one of the first 3 questions.... if not then obviously no one knows.

you can do it by yourself but an attorney will be much easier nd fster due to the language barrier.

No a psychiatrist.

What kind of Lawyer would I need for getting out of an apartment lease? -

My landlord has broken the contract and I want to get out of my lease. I need a lawyer who can fight the case in court.

A good one.

start by not payin the rent, then he will serve you with notice of eviction, let him evict you, lease is over.

Real Estate Attorney. Are you sure it s worth paying an attorney $200/hour?

Look for one that specializes in landlord/tenant issues.

What can I do about my lawyer who is not closing my mothers estate and for the most part ignoring me? -

My mother s estate has for some time now been able to close (so my lawyer says) but he has not done so. He is always busy off doing something else. There were many bills that had to be paid from the sale of her house (only thing she left) All of them have been paid. What is left should be coming to me. Now, here is what I quot;thinkquot; happened. My lawyer set me up with his real estate friend who put moms house on the market,a buyer is found and we agree on the price. The house is sold and the closing takes place, the proceeds pay off moms bills. Since then the buyers have completly remodeled moms house and put it back on the market at a hefty price, to this day the house has not resold (keep that in mind). Looking through the closing documents it occurs to me I never got a copy of the check that was used to buy the house, the buyers used quot;cashquot;. I think the buyers only paid my lawyer what mom owed and were hopeing to turn a profit quickly and give me what I deserve as well. How can I prove?

If you cannot fire him, due to a legal contract for his services, you have at least two avenues. Call the legal aid bureau; if that does not work, call the number in the yellow pages for the legal disabilities bureau, which investigates the conduct of lawyers. If that does not work, call the probate court and ask for advice.

Fire him.

Your lawyer should provide you copies of all documents, correspondence and checks. There should be an estate account for which the funds passed through (and through which you are paying his fees). Who is the executor of the estate? Where is the documentation? If someone other than you is the executor - you would not see documentation and you should speak to them. Estate settlement CAN take time. What new owners do with the property should be of no concern to you.

Hire a different lawyer and watch your back!

For a simple will, what are the advantages of using a lawyer versus an online service? -

I am preparing a simple will (just me, my husband and designating guardians for my kids). Is there any reason to go to a lawyer versus an online site that offers legally approved wills for the province I live in?

none == in fact it can be hand written as long as it has witness!!!

Actually, for a BASIC will the attorney uses the SAME form as the on-line sites. As likely as not, the attorney s ASSISTANT will file in the blanks.

Can you only do a living trust through a lawyer? -

I can t afford to have a lawyer do a living trust. I really need one done, because I have a daughter and stepkids. I have heard a will would have to go through probate court. Is there anyway besides a lawyer to do a living trust?

Got to legalzoom.com These are forms done by lawyers in the state you live in but they are much more reasonable than going to a lawyers office. May cost, I m guessing, $200.00 as opposed to 600.00. Possibly less. I would always suggest a lawyer because if it is not done properly, your wishes will not be honored. A will eliminates the probate problem. When you die without a will, you children may have to go back to the courts yearly to get anything and then the lawyers fee will take away from that. There is usually a 6 month period to allow people to file against the estate and that is why notices od death are put in the legal notices in newspapers. Try legal zoom.com and just check prices

If you really need a living trust, and I am convinced that most people don t, yes, you can do one for yourself. I believe the whole movement regarding people setting up living trusts started with a book by Norman F. Dacey entitled quot; How to Avoid Probate!quot; I believe your can purchase it from booksellers for less than $10.00. http://www.amazon.com/How-Avoid-Probate-...

How about this? You can have a living will and a Will drawn up for yourself for free , done by a great attorney and 100% legal. It is a service that our company offers for members, amoung many other free legal services that i am sure you would be interested in. Visit my website http://www.prepaidlegal.com/hub/dhaller and click on the family plan. This plan offers a great service with many free services and the company is GREAT! I have the service myself and have drawn up both a Will and a Living Will for free , i have also used the free services. Check it out , it is worth it to protect your family. oh , and you can check the company out at the Better Business Bureau and the New York Stock Exchange using the ticker symbol PPD. Good luck and Have a great Day!

What to do when a lawyer takes your money and does nothing but violate your rights? -

How do you get the law to work on your side In my friends divorce settlement she was to get certain things (like a $15,ooo one time payment and Health coverage benefits which her husband simply doesn t pay, she hired 3 different lawyers who took the little money she has left, one said he couldn t take her case afterall sev months later shile sitting with all her papers and kept her money, the next sent her private matters to her ex s attorneys office for them to see. Meanwhile her financial accountant (who turns out to be a drug addict and dealer) has raped her bank account of 100,000 dollars, the bank acknowledged it as fraud and money laundering but isn t taking any action. Where does she go with this mess?!! She has no $ left for a lawyer, the police can t do anything, who actually does something in this country if there is grand larson, hwere does one go?

sue him. MALPRACTICE

Okay, I ll break this out point by point. First, with regard to her attorney sending information to husbands attorney, he can do this it s called quot;DISCOVERYquot; and in almost any instance, nothing is too privelaged to be communicated to them. Next, if your friend has a complaint against the attorney, she can do both of these. 1.) Contact the State Bar. If you need help contacting them, email me. 2.) Hire a malpractice attorney to sue former attorney. They work on commission and won t charge your friend if they don t win. Wait for the State Bar to finish their investigation first. Then contact them and get a copy of your file from them. They will have professional evidence prepared by the best professionals that you can use in your civil malpractice case. Next, with regard to the financial accountant, you need to contact all of the banks where the money was. Already done that? Contact your local manager of FDIC, google it, and you;ll get more direction.

Get a lawyer to sue the first lawyer and then he will do the same like the first!! they are Mafia!

Call another lawyer and sue.

If you believe your attorney violated the codes of professional conduct, or acted illegally or unethically, then you can file a complaint with the state bar or state supreme court s ethics board. From what you said, there are three issues. The first is what the bank did, and unless you can convince the Attorney General or District Attorney to file criminal charges, that is something that must be resolved in civil court, which means a lawsuit, which means an attorney if you want any chance of winning. The other is the communication between current and former attorneys, which is often necessary as part of the substitution of counsel. Both attorneys are still bound by duty of confidentiality. {INSERT} Or by quot;ex s attorneyquot; if you mean the opposing attorney for the ex-spouse, then Chris is correct. That s called Discovery. Finally, you seem upset because the case isn t over and you ran out of money. Look at it by analogy. If you take your car to the mechanic, and are told five things need fixing, but you can only pay for three of them... should the mechanic do the other two for free? Lawyers provide a service, and while many work based on the promise of future payment, some want to be paid as they go. Just like doctors and plumbers and mechanics. That s the nature of any profession.

She should report them to the bar, than sue the bums.

People get arrested all the time for money laundering and fraud, why wouldn t the police pursue that end of it, especially that much money? That s a crime, report it to the police and take all the records to prove it. Then contact the IRS and report the accountant, they ll track a nickel to the ends of the earth. Sending documents to the opposing attorney is both legal and required as part of a case, called discovery. She should have been able to see his financial documentation as well. If she didn t get what was stipulated in the divorce settlement she can contact the court and ask for the procedure for a hearing to bring him in and get what she is entitled to. With a little research and some help from the judge s office she can do that herself.

How much would a lawyer charge to set up a trust and will for a wealthy family? -

My wife and I are trying to set up a trust and will to make sure our kids are all set. We have about $25 million in net worth (house, cash, assets etc) and are trying to customize the will such that its protected from outsiders taking it other than our kids. We have hired a lawyer to help us but he is charging $75,000 to do the whole thing exactly how we want it. Is that high? how much should it cost?

With estate attorneys the old adage: you get what you pay for, applies. Great estate attorneys are not just there to fill in the blanks on a form and then produce the trust (I assume a series of exotic type trusts and not just a will). Is the attorney providing trustee services? Will the attorney make sure the trusts are funded properly? If you were referred to this attorney by another professional, that person should know a number of attorneys with which you can work. I think you should compare services between at least two attorneys. Just get a clear picture what $75,000 is buying you now and in future services. You should have a good feeling in your gut also about the attorney you choose. Truthfully, I don t know if there are many estate attorneys or people with your level of net worth trolling this board. You have to do your due diligence. If you re asking this question to a world of strangers, something tells me you don t exactly trust the attorney --- so get go get some comparisons.

Is it possible a lawyer can be paid off without letting his client know? -

I have a lawsuit with a major insurance co and all of a sudden it appears my attorney is siding with them. How can I find out?

Without knowing the details of your claim we cannot determine if he is working in your best interests. He cannot make any kind of settlement without your approval (unless you granted him that authority). But if he feels that you have a weak case, he might suggest you settle. What happened? How come you couldn t reach an agreement with the insurance company without the use of a lawyer? You know that now that you hired a lawyer, he ll get about 1/3rd of any settlement you get.

You hired him to represent YOU. If he can t do his job, FIRE HIM and find another lawyer.

This is BS. Your lawyer is your advocate. He is under control from the State Board that controls ethical behavior. Your lawyer may be trying to let you down softly. He may know that the other side will not settle and he does not want to go to trial. I would have a square conversation with him.

How can a find the educational lawyer by name Mathew Cohen? -

How do I find a lawyer that can help me get the right school for my daughter, when CPS educational system has failed her. How do I find out information about how to take action against SSI for reducing my daugheters benifits? How do I take action against an insurance company that has denied my daughter the right to insurance based upon medical records?

Monahan amp; Cohen, Attorneys at Law 225 West Washington Street, Suite 2300 Chicago, Illinois 60606 USA Telephone: (312) 419-0252 Facsimile: (312) 419-7428 TTY: (312) 419-7427

To locate attorney Cohen contact either the American Bar Association (see below) or your state s Bar Association. They can help you track down a specific lawyer or give you names of appropriate other lawyers. Good luck.

Picking a lawyer out of the yellow pages? -

I just moved to a small town in upstate NY, have no idea what lawyer to call regarding wills. I don t know anyone here, so how do I get trusting referrals, and avoid scams? Does it matter if I go to a woman/man attorney? I hear a lot of male attorneys are sexists towards women, and vice versa?

Not the yellow pages - go to www.martindale.com and search by specialty, firm size, location, etc. Martindale also contains all information available, i.e. biography and website.

I would be very careful, because most of the time, the biggest names in the phone book are the biggest crooks. A friend of mine was really mistreated by a lawyer who has lots of advertisements here in my town. The best way is to talk to people and get some personal experiences. Good luck to you!

Check to see if your area has a Lawyer Referral Service - you call and tell them what you are looking for and they will give you the name of an attorney in your area that specializes in that type of law.

Will s are a pretty clear cut thing unless you have a sizable estate. I don t know about the sexist thing, but your best bet would be to ask people you know. Do you work, ask people there. If not try to go to http://legalmatch.com/ and hope it has some attornies that fit your needs. Let them know you expect to if nothing else have a few minutes of their time on the phone, or in office to get a feel before you decide to hire them. Legalmatch.com can be a good site if enough attornies in your area use it.

Picking a lawyer out of the yellow pages is like purchasing a lottery ticket from the stall.

Try the New York State Bar Association (nysba.org), or Findlaw.com. Both will put you on the track of a Trust amp; Estates professional in your area.

I work for a victim service agency as a counselor. Because of my position I know every lawyer in town, as do all of my co-workers. Because I live in New York I know for a fact that there are agencies like mine in every county. Call your local victim s service agency and just pick the brain of somewhere there. Even though you are not looking for a family law attorney they will still be able to steer you in the right direction. Not all male lawyers are sexist. Some are really great. But if you meet with a lawyer (male or female) that you don t like, don t be afraid to not use their services. Most don t charge for an initial consultation.

I found lots of good information here.

How do you get a lawyer when you dont make much money? -

I ve been in a Rehab center for Brain Injuries for the past 4 years this June. I have been abused while I have been here. I need a Lawyer to take my case so that I can get out of here and live on my own.

In all jurisdictions, there are lawyers who do pro bono work. You can find them out by contacting the bar association for your area. There are often state bar associations, county associations, city associations. All lawyers may not be listed in each one. So check each one in your area. Go to the link below and enter your city and state in the box and see what comes up. Or you can just call 411 and the operator can help you. Also, if you live near a university that has a law school, they have law clinics that help people in the community for little or no money. Visit the school and they can help you too. Please do not be discouraged. The system is designed to be intimidating. But there are mechanisms out there to help you so just be patient and something will come through for you. Good luck and let me know if you need additional help trying to find someone.

Every state has a non-profit legal center for those who cannot afford an attorney and really need one. Look up your states law site and ponder there. If you still have no luck, call and speak with an attorney and briefly tell them your story...they may just take it on! Hope this helps!

You may be able to find a lawyer that will take your case on a contingency fee basis, you don t have to pay them unless they win your case. Try searching for lawyers in your area and see what they say. A good place to find names and phone numbers for lawyers is at http://www.martindale.com/

Find a lawyer who will do the work for you Pro Bono. Call your neighborhood legal services or county bar association. good luck.

Yeah, I think you have 2 options... go get a lawyer pro bono or go talk to a social worker. They might have other suggestions and/or set you up with a lawyer that will help you pro bono.

Legal Aid? Helps pay or pays completly the cost to someone who cannot finiancially afford a lawyer

i live in Oregon, the reason i say this is because in Oregon lawyers/ firms are required to have quot;Pro-Bo noquot; cases at least 1 per year. check into it.

What are the hours like for a patent lawyer? -

Or any other type of lawyer. Please give a range of answers. Thanks!

guy above is CLUELESS. Patent lawyers are 80+ hours the first few years. You have to talk to the people filing the patents between 9-5 and then you have to actually do your worh the other 40+ hours. The best part of the job is that you get paid well, and work some munch your first few years, that you do not spend any of the money you make (your meals get paid for when you work late).

Patent lawyer must likely 9 to 5, no trial prep, etc may work longer on certain patents Any type of trial lawyer wacky hours, esp when trial approaches 80 hours easy before trial Any type of new lawyer no trial 80 hours billing the big boys need to make there monies Prosecutors, trials long hours, usually depends 9 to 7

About how much can I expect in lawyer fees? -

I am currently in the midst of filing a dispute with a loan that my mother (recently deceased) had taken out without my or my family s knowledge. It s a very very large loan, and forged mine and my dad s signatures...I am thinking that I may need to get a lawyer for this but hesitant due to how much money this might cost... ..Does anyone have any idea what kind of money range I d be looking at?

How much you can expect to pay is the lawyer s rate for the amount of time expended plus any/all expenses unless you can prove who forged the signatures and that may allow you to sue for damages and collect the whole sum from that individual. If forgery occurred you definitely need to retain an attorney now...not later...to protect your interest in this matter.

Rates for lawyers vary depending on location, practice area, and firm size. If you stick with a small / mid-sized firm (5 to 100 lawyers) in a second tier market (for example, Springfield, IL v. Chicago) you should be able to find someone in the range of $150 to $200 per hour, but check around. Try the martindale hubble firm directory at www.martindale.com to find a couple local firms that practice in loans and estates (sounds like you might have an estate issue), give them a call, and compare rates.

Can I find a lawyer to help me with a DWI In DC? -

I got a DWI in DC it was a .11 I need to get a lawyer but I dont make enough money to pay one lump sum. I need to get a lawyer that I can pay off with monthly payments. Please help me!!!! I dont have anything else on my record. And I dont have any idea where to start.

I highly recommend you hire a lawyer before going to court. They would eat you up without legal representation. Many lawyers will take a case with a payment plan attached. Work it out with your attorney, I m sure someone will work with you on a payment plan trust me! You may have to give something upfront but not the whole amount. Best thing to do is start calling around to some lawyers in DC.

why do you need a laywer? your breath test proved you were driving while intoxicated (if were a criminal proceedings, you would have been offered free legal representation). So it seems your case is a civil one. Show up to court, admit that you were wrong (judges love when people take responsibility for their actions). stress that this is your first time (it is your first time right?) and that you have learned from your lesson. As liberal as this country is, you ll probably get a probation type of sentence, and a minor fine.

Try to get Mayor Marion Barry s lawyer.

I got my first speeding ticket in texas and I am 20 yrs old. Should I get a lawyer or go myself? -

I don t know if I should pay 229.00 for a lawyer to handle the ticket or should I go myself and get defensive driving? I am a student and don t have funds and will the lawyer make a difference than if I go? HELP!

In most Texas jurisdictions you can ask for a Deferred Adjudication. You don t need a lawyer. If the court agrees you may have to go to a Defensive Driving class. A deferred puts the ticket on the shelve, usually for 6 months, then it drops off your record if you don t get another ticket by then. Sometimes they will dismiss it for the Defensive Driving without a deferred period.

you dont need a lawyer for a speeding ticket.thats a minor offense and not even a misdemeanor.

Just go in and get the dum dum school.Paying any money to a attorney would be a waste, unless you re not guilty. If you re not guilty get a attorney amp; fight it.If you are guilty take your lumps like a big boy.

Just pay the fine, and be done with it. A lawyer will cost you more, and you ll still likely have to pay the ticket fine.

The best thing to do is call the courts where your ticket came from and ask them since they are the source for all the laws and regulations in that area. Also see if they will allow you to take an online traffic school class. If so that would help you to avoid your insurance going up and a point on your license. I just took a court approved On Line traffic school class with http://www.TicketRelief.com. Very fast and cheap. Just make sure the courts give you the green light to take the class and that its court approved.

Just pay the ticket and do traffic school. You can do it online now. It ll be far cheaper than hiring a lawyer. Nobody hires a lawyer for a run of the mill speeding ticket.

Pay the ticket, it ll be a lot cheaper.

skip the lawyer...no reason for it. pay the ticket and be done with it. maybe you ll get lucky and the cop won t show up in court and you won t have to pay.

wont the ticket be cheaper?

What can be done, if a lawyer clearly embellishes a complaint/motion in court? -

My ex is trying to take me to court for custody, however his complaint rest in my current boyfriends criminal history. They have taken part of my boyfriends transcripts from his trial and have reworded it to make it sound like he was guilty of something he clearly did not do. What can be done?

im to tired to format it all, but check out federal rules of civil procedure, rule 11 - regarding what is signed by an attorney and sanctions for various types of frivolous statements and baseless cclaims

You should contact a lawyer, provide him/her with a true copy of the un-embellished transcript of the proceedings in question and ask if there is grounds for a Rule 11 violation.

Thats why you have redirect, so you can clarify what he did,and show the bias in the othersides claims...however most testimony in a child custody case is given a far wider allowance for hearsay than in a criminal proceeding,so they can introduce partial facts and even non-eye witness testimony. Its your sides job to try and keep the record straight. No attorney is going to suborn out and out perjury, but they are allowed to read only the parts of a transcript that they feel is relevant ,you ll have to challenge and clear the record, unless that would even make things look worse.I assume they are trying to establish that your unfit because your association with dangerous criminals makes for an unsafe enviroment for the child, the court is biased on the side of caution for the childs protection to start with so any damning past behavior on the boyfriends part makes good fodder for their side.

What are the steps to take to make a divorce legal. I know I need a lawyer, what else do I need? -

Does the lawyer notifies the divorce to the partner? What should I expect from the lawyer? If I was married in another country but currently live in another, does that matter? Will it influence the outcome, slowing it down? Thank you.

Well, I am certainly not a lawyer, and don t remotely pretend to offer quality legal advice. Me giving legal advice makes about as much sense as some hardware store guy trying to cure a sunburn. But, reading your question makes me think the other answerers may have missed a point. You mention that you were married in country quot;xquot; and you live in country quot;yquot;. They re assuming that country quot;yquot; is America, and their advice is geared to this situation. So my comment is that if you are not a resident of the USA, the legal comments and advice mentioned on this site to your question probably do not apply. John Jones, M.D.

You ll probably need some proof of your marriage. The attorney will serve the other party. There will be a court date, the case will be proved up, the other party has their say, the judge makes a determination regarding divorce, distribution of property and custody of children. The order is recorded. Being married outside the country shouldn t have a major impact as long as you are legal resident here.

Do not have to have a lawyer. Go and get forms from court. Fill out forms, send to court Have your ex served. Go to court, have hearing..divorce final 6 months later If children or large amounts of money are involved, tey complicate process.

Can I claim lawyer fees on taxes? -

Im in a custody/divorce battle and I live in CA I ve spent upwards of 10,000 in the past 6 months on my lawyer fees. Can I claim this money on my taxes? I really need a tax break.

Only the amounts allocable to income tax counsel, and that s subject to a 2% of AGI floor.

Only the portion that is attributable to tax advice, tax return preparation, or the generation of taxable income, if any. Those amounts MUST be itemized separately on the attorney s bills. Portions attributable to the custody fight are not deductible. Any deductible amounts are claimed as miscellaneous itemized deductions on Schedule A if you itemize, and only the portion that exceeds 2% of your AGI is deductible.

What kind of lawyer should i look for? -

Background information: i got divorced, and in my weakened state my doctor wooed me. i married 8 months later. 2 years later after i paid off all of his debt by pulling a second mortgage on my home, his true colors showed and we divorced(highly oversimplified). I want to sue him for the mental anguish he put me and my kids through. Also i believe i was targeted and conned, since at the time i had money and i had recently been divorced. What kind of lawyer should i seek out to do this?

Any attorney that practices civil or family law can help you with this.

Reckless driving ticket in Virginia, should i hire a lawyer? -

I recently got a ticket for reckless driving by way of speeding (81/55 in Fairfax County Virginia. This is my first traffic violation but am otherwise a good driver. Should i hire a lawyer or represent myself in trying to get a lesser charge of simple speeding or improper driving?

I would hire an attorney ....its a gamble either way ....and if you could get it reduced that would really help. Do you feel confident enough you could try and get it reduced .......if you do then do it. But attorneys know the cops and sometimes they quot;scratch each others backquot; Good Luck ~~~

Just pay for it. Don t hire a lawyer. My mom is a judge, and she hates these type of cases. And I don t mean to be preachy, but SPEEDING KILLS.

You need an attorney. With that new law in Virginia your ticket will be a couple thousand dollars, at a minimum.

take it like a man...show up at the court room tipsy....

You could just go alone and sign the paper saying that you are willing to be tried sans lawyer. At that speed you will most certainly be convicted. The fine will be hefty, you will get some suspension, the extra VA fine on top and have to pay for reinstatement. Plus your insurance will go up for YEARS. While there is guarantee an attorney might work something out for you and the money on the gamble might in the end pay off in spades. Fairfax court is like a cattle roundup on branding day. A zillion people who go in front of the judge for 2 minutes and you are bang! Guilty. But an attorney can cut you out out the herd, speak to the prosecutor and maybe get you some sort of deal. A decent lawyer is best (say $1500) up is best but even a cheaper one would be just fine. If you have no money at this point to pay for a lawyer just go to court. When they ask if you have an attorney say no. They will just have you sign a paper saying next time you come you will have one so you get an automatic continuance. Get the lawyer.

I vote hire one Good luck!!!! Kelsi

omg thats wat happened to my mom last suimmer wen we were driving to maryland!!!!! GET A LAWYER!

Always hire a lawyer for a ticket. Doesn t matter what it is.

nope.... u went way too fast and finally got caught... now u pay for it

Are you a Virginia resident? You better hope you aren t because residents of VA get very hefty fines for reckless driving and others driving offenses. You don t need an attorney, but you can hire one if you want.

Many reasons you may want a lawyer/I may miss some: 1.If you feel you were falsey accused 2.If you are not familiar with Virginia traffic laws 3.If you feel the officer that issued the ticket was trying to make his quota 4.If you feel you will be shafted 5.If you feel you are one to be reckon with 6.You want a fair trail 7.You feel the lawyer will lessen your penalty UNLESS YOU HAVE A SURPLUS OF MONEY amp; YOU CAN MISS A DAY OF WORK JUST PAY THE TICKET (NOTE)a street pharmicist does not count

Usually if you show up to court you can get it reduced. I heard that in Virginia you can be fined $1000 to $3000 for excessive speeding, so it depends on how much the money matters to you. Do you want to give it to the state or do you want to give it to a lawyer? How much was the ticket?

wow good job

Hire a lawyer

If you were going 81 in a 55 then you deserve a reckless driving ticket. Virginia is ruthless when it comes to speeding. I wouldn t fight it...your only defense is quot;I m otherwise a good driver.quot;

Don t waste time and money getting a lawyer. Just represent yourself in trying to get a lesser fine and or charge. More than likely the judge will lower the charge to speeding and lower your fine if you are respectable and do not try and make a lot of excuses. Keep it short and simple and say quot;your honorquot; to the judge.

typically the first offense they go easy on you...talk to the prosecutor and if you don t agree take further action

just pay it. everyone pays it. Your only way out is if you go to court and the officer that gave you the ticket doesn t show up. and its pretty hard to accomplish that.

Throw your self on the mercy of the court. Beg for forgiveness, and swear you ll never do it again. Pay the fine and see if they have the same laws for abjucation, maybe it will come off your record in 90 days. Good luck.

just deal with it like everyone else

The first thing you do is find out, by calling the court, to see if you can take a driving class and pay a small fine in order to avoid having any points put on your driver s license. In many states, you can take the driving class online.

If you know you were wrong just pay the fine. This will be cheaper for you. If this is just your first time it really shouldn t be bad just a small fine. If you pay to get a lawyer you will only be waisting your money. Trust me just pay the fine and learn from the experience.

How to become a Lawyer step by step after high school? -

I am 25-years old, i am a computer operator for IT for 5-years now. I got into IT because of hard work and connections thru people i know. I thought i wanted to be a Flight Attendant so I have recieved my certificate in Fight Attendant school but I am still not satisfied because i still want to be a lawyer (not sure what kind yet) and to be able to say that i have a degree. My highest level of education as far as Diploma s go is my High School Diploma, and i have always wanted to be a lawyer. Step by Step, can someone please tell me what to do. I am looking around to Colleges in my area and have searched online, but i am not sure that what i am reading is correct, so again can someone please tell me what to do? Thanx!

Your life-experience in IT and Flight Attendant school will help you, and will give you an advantage over someone who has no life-experience and is just out of high school. If you want to become a lawyer, the first thing you need to do is to get into as good a college as you can. Try getting into one that has a very good liberal arts program, where your curriculum will be rich and varied. Undergraduate students are often surprised to learn that there is no specific major or minor required for most careers in law or for entry into law school. What is required is that the student develop certain basic skills which are essential to the practice of law. Most law school officials and pre-law advisors agree that there are three attributes which are most important. They are: I. Skill in comprehension and use of language Language is a lawyer’s working tool. In seeking to convince, in drafting legal instruments and legislation, in oral and written arguments, he or she must have the capacity to communicate to strangers with clarity, precision and persuasiveness. He or she must be able to comprehend with precision the meaning of others. One of the common complaints of law school professors is that beginning law students cannot write. After four years of college, students sometimes cannot write an ordinary declarative sentence. There are reasons: large classes, objective exams, non-intellectual courses, etc. But in law school and as a lawyer, you need to be able to write in essay form with logic, clarity, precision, and persuasiveness. Therefore, courses which develop cognitive and expressive skills by requiring extensive writing are extremely good preparation for any career, but especially for a legal career. II. Critical understanding of and interest in human institutions and values Lawyers are a powerful force in the shaping and operation of institutions and values. They are instrumental in establishing the policies which guide society. Therefore, courses which develop an awareness of social concerns by exposing the student to history, ethical, and societal issues are extremely beneficial for a career in law. III. Ability in logical and analytical reasoning An important part of the lawyer’s work is problem solving. You have a problem: a city school board, a court, or a dispute between two people. Creative, workable solutions must be found. The difference, often times, between a top attorney and mediocre one is the ability of the former to come up with a workable solution – a creative answer. Creative thinking requires the development of skills in deductive and inductive reasoning, reasoning by analogy, and critical analysis in the use of facts and legal principles. Therefore, courses which prepare a student in the reasoning process by exposing the student to concepts of logic, persuasion, research and writing serve as an excellent preparation for any career, but especially for a legal career. Consequently, a pre-law student has a wide choice of undergraduate majors, minors, and electives. No one set of courses is required for law school, and no one set is the best. Various areas of study are beneficial for pre-law study, with an overall emphasis on a well-rounded, rather than a narrow and specialized, education. Traditionally, courses in economics, English, history, philosophy, political science, and business have been viewed as solid preparation for law school. What do Law Schools Look for in Applicants? In general, a law school admissions committee looks at two things first: undergraduate grades and the LSAT score. These two factors are the main ones which will determine your chances of acceptance at most law schools. Also important are recommendations, extracurricular activities, special talents, etc., but grades and the LSAT are the prime factors. So whatever program you choose in college, it is important that you strive for good grades. If you are a bit slow in learning, then study hard every day. Tears won’t erase poor grades when you apply to law school. Some Advice From Law Schools on Pre-Law Education “The School of Law does not prescribe any particular pre-law curriculum. The faculty strongly recommends, however, an undergraduate curricular program which provides a wide-ranging liberal education. Such a broad exposure is considered more advisable and useful than a narrow emphasis on vocationally-oriented courses. Particularly recommended are those courses which provide training in written and oral expression and which are intellectually and analytically demanding.” (University of San Francisco School of Law) “Unlike the pre-medical curriculum that contains specific courses, some obligatory, there is no recommended set of pre-law courses. Enrolling in courses that are designated as part of a pre-law curriculum or major tends to be a less effective means of preparing for law school than enrolling in a diverse college program. While such pre-law courses may introduce you to broad legal principles and may present you with enough information to decide whether to continue with a legal education, they are rarely taught with the same depth and rigor as actual law school courses. In general, law schools prefer that you reserve your legal study for law school and fill your undergraduate curriculum with broad, diverse, and difficult courses.” (The Official Guide to U.S. Law Schools) “It is essential that the general program be challenging and that the student has become intellectually engaged in it. It is desirable that the applicant has studied a range of subjects, including history, mathematics, a natural science, literature, and economics or one of the social sciences. It is important that the range of studies have comprised certain basic subjects: the essentials of American History, enough mathematics to allow comprehension of statistics, the basic principles of logic and economics, cultural heritage – the European and preferably that of another culture as well. In addition, since law is above all an art of language, it is well for the student to have had a great deal of experience with writing and with close, intelligent criticism of this written work. A student whose undergraduate education has not enlarged his or her capacity to read, write, speak, and think and to see the relationship both among ideas and between ideas and their human contexts is poorly prepared for law school and even less prepared for professional service in the law. Virtually any major within a strong general program can be the ground for a good undergraduate education, if taught demandingly and if it leads to substantive mastery of a discipline, preferably a difficult one. There is no need for the major to be related to law; in fact, it is generally wasteful to study law as a preparation for the study of law. If we were to sum up our advice in a phrase, it would be ‘Study something interesting and hard.quot; (University of Michigan Law School) One Last Word You do not have to be a backslapping extrovert to be a good lawyer. Many of the most able, successful attorneys are quiet, soft spoken people. Brains, training, learning, the ability to communicate, technical skill, and hard work are what count. In law school, your success will depend largely upon your ability to reason, your skill in writing, and your general background and training from high school and college – plus hard work. _____________________

There are alternatives. Read that one can become a lawyer thru apprenticeship in some states. Becoming a paralegal can also be a path to becoming a lawyer (not in and of itself). Report Abuse

It is THE MOST BORING job you ve ever imagined. That s why attorneys ask for so much an hour....glorified paper shufflers. Report Abuse

Day in the P is wrong, law school is only 3 years. MM is wrong, being a lawyer is hardly a boring job, a lawyer hardly paper shuffles but likes that he can charge what he does per hour. Insightful is right, doing paralegal work is a good way to test the waters. Report Abuse

good.... I m on my way on becoming a malapractice. Report Abuse

I am doing it the long hard way. I dropped out of high school and chose a different route. BUT now at age 36, I am on track w/ a 4.0 GPA and I am on my way to my BA in Paralegal. It can be done.. just be patient and work hard. My new saying is......It is never to late! Report Abuse
