It depends on the state you live in I think. I live in Ohio and I work at our courthouse. I am currently in the divorce division and we have people that get divorced and get dissolutions without an attorney. It comes down to the work. You have to submit a lot of paper work, motions complaints etc and you do that all on your own. You could get an attorney and they would do all that for you. It would be more expensive however. I would call your local courthouse, ask for the divorce or domestic division and they can fill you in on the things you need to do.
Your question depends on where you live. In California you can file it all yourself for around 200 bucks as long as you have no kids together or property to be divided. Some states do not have dissolusions, just divorces. BTW, the only questions they are allowed to answer are how much paperwork costs to file, or perhaps the location of a bathroom or vending machine. No legal advice of any kind will be given to you in a Courthouse.
If you have no property and no children and the divorce is uncontested, you can go to Family Court and the Clerks should be able to tell you what forms to fill out. Take your marriage license with you and some id just in case you need it. You should be able to get a dissolution in the minimum amount of time set by law.
You can find the papers on-line, print them out and file them with the court. There is however, a filing fee. You could find that out by calling the Clerk of the Court, Juvenile/ Domestic court or Family court.
You can go to court and the employees there can tell you what you need to do. Of course, it will cost to file papers, but not so bad. Go to court and have them direct you on what to do.
